Bows & Yumi
Bows and Yumi serve as essential ranged offensive tools in Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, allowing units to engage enemies from a safe distance and pick off vulnerable targets. Archers and Bow Knights, such as Takumi or Niles, are the primary wielders of these weapons. Bows are strong against flying units and weak against armored units, making them ideal for dealing with Pegasus Knights and Wyvern Riders who might otherwise pose a threat to your ground forces. Yumi, the Japanese equivalent, often found in the Samurai and Archer classes, share similar strengths and weaknesses but can sometimes offer higher accuracy. The ability to attack without fear of retaliation is a significant advantage, especially when dealing with powerful melee units or when trying to weaken enemies before they can reach your front lines. A well-placed shot from a Long Bow can significantly reduce an enemy's HP, setting them up for a finishing blow from another unit. The range of bows, typically 2-3 spaces, allows for flexible positioning and strategic engagement.
When planning your attacks with bows, remember their limitations. Armored units, like Knights, often possess high defense, making them resistant to bow damage. In such cases, it's better to use bows to target their support units or to soften them up for your melee allies. The weapon triangle's effectiveness against flying units is a key advantage; a single well-aimed shot can often neutralize a dangerous aerial threat. Consider the terrain; forests and other obstacles can block line of sight, preventing archers from attacking. Conversely, elevated positions can grant bonuses to accuracy. In chapters like Chapter 17, where numerous flying enemies are present, archers become absolutely critical for survival. The effectiveness of bows is also tied to the unit's Skill and Speed; a high Skill stat ensures accuracy, while high Speed allows for follow-up attacks if the enemy's Speed is lower. Some unique bows, like the Silver Bow, offer increased power but have limited uses, so strategic deployment is essential.
