Mages, Dark Mages, and Shrine Maidens, such as Odin, Nyx, and Felicia respectively, wield these arcane weapons. Tomes are generally strong against physical attackers with low resistance and weak against those with high resistance. They are also effective against certain enemy types depending on the elemental affinity of the tome. For example, a Fire Tome deals effective damage against units weak to fire, while a Wind Tome might be better against slower, armored foes. The ability to attack from a distance, often with a range of 1-2 spaces, allows mages to engage enemies safely, especially those who lack ranged magical defenses. Scrolls, often associated with classes like the Onmyoji, offer similar magical capabilities, sometimes with unique effects or status ailments. The utility of tomes extends beyond raw damage; spells like Freeze or Sleep can incapacitate dangerous enemies, providing crucial breathing room for your army. The effectiveness of a tome is heavily influenced by the unit's Magic stat and the enemy's Resistance.

When deploying mages, it's vital to consider the enemy's resistances. Heavily armored units or those with high resistance stats will often shrug off magical attacks. In such scenarios, it's more effective to use your mages to target weaker, more vulnerable enemies or to support your physical attackers by weakening tougher foes. The weapon triangle for tomes is less straightforward than for physical weapons, often relying on elemental matchups. For instance, a Thunder Tome might be effective against units weak to lightning. In chapters like Chapter 15, where several enemy types are present, a balanced magical offense can be crucial. The range of tomes allows them to be positioned strategically to exploit enemy weaknesses or to support units engaged in melee combat. Some unique tomes, like the Leo's personal tome, Brynhildr, possess special abilities that can debuff enemies or provide defensive benefits. Pay attention to the enemy's movement and positioning; a well-placed tome attack can prevent a dangerous enemy from reaching your lines or can finish off a weakened foe before they can retaliate.
