Paralogue chapters, also known as Gaiden chapters, are side chapters that offer additional content and often provide new recruitable characters. These chapters can serve various purposes, from expanding the story to offering unique challenges or rewards. Understanding how they function can significantly impact your gameplay experience and unit roster.

In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, side chapters become available if a certain number of units have been lost, providing new characters to replenish your team. This mechanic helps prevent your roster from becoming too thin due to permanent death. The series has also introduced modes like Casual Mode and Phoenix Mode to ease difficulty, where defeated characters return in subsequent chapters or even the next turn, respectively.

Some games, like Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, feature introductory chapters (Lyn's Tale) that act as extended tutorials without permanent death. Characters defeated in Lyn's story return in the main Eliwood's/Hector's story, though they will be weaker. Occasionally, an NPC's death can trigger a Game Over, similar to a Lord character, requiring their protection to complete a map.
