Chapter 6: The Choice
Chapter 6 delves into various difficulty modes and unique mechanics designed to make the game more accessible or offer different strategic experiences. From the introduction of Casual Mode to the unique Hero Skill in Cipher, players have options to tailor their gameplay. This section also covers how certain chapters serve as extended tutorials.
Difficulty and Accessibility Options:
- Casual Mode: Introduced in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, this mode disables permanent death. Defeated characters return in the next chapter, easing the difficulty for new players.
- Phoenix Mode: Featured in Fire Emblem Fates, this mode takes accessibility a step further. Defeated characters return to battle on the very next turn with full health, ideal for strategy RPG novices.
Tutorial and Story Progression:
- Lyn's Tale: In Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Lyn's introductory chapters act as an extended tutorial. Permanent death is not active here, and units defeated in Lyn's story return in Eliwood's/Hector's story, though they will be weaker.
Unique Mechanics:
- Hero Skill: In Cipher, characters from certain games (Red) possess a Hero Skill, allowing the main character to change mid-play. This is a unique mechanic for these units.
- Gaiden Chapters: Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon features side chapters that become available if a certain number of units are lost, providing new recruitable characters to replenish your roster.
