Crests and Relics are integral to the lore and power dynamics of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Understanding their origins, the abilities they grant, and their sificance to the characters and the world of Fódlan is key to appreciating the game's deeper narrative and strategic elements.

What are Crests?

Crests are hereditary marks passed down through noble bloodlines, believed to be gifts from the Goddess. They grant individuals innate abilities and resistances, often manifesting as bonuses when using specific weapons or magic. A character's Crest influences their potential and can determine their suitability for certain classes or combat roles.

Major and Minor Crests

There are two types of Crests: Major and Minor. Major Crests are rarer and more powerful, offering greater benefits. Minor Crests provide lesser, but still significant, advantages. Many characters possess a Crest, and some may even possess two (a Major and a Minor, or two Minors).

Relics and Divine Weapons

Relics are powerful, ancient artifacts often associated with specific Crests or historical figures. When wielded by a character who possesses the corresponding Crest, these Relics unlock their full potential, granting immense power and unique abilities. For example, the Sword of the Creator is a powerful Relic wielded by Byleth, tied to their unique lineage.

Crests and Combat Effectiveness

In combat, a character's Crest can provide passive bonuses, such as increased damage with a specific weapon type or resistance to certain magic. When a character wields a Relic that matches their Crest, these bonuses are often amplified, and the Relic itself may possess devastating combat arts or passive effects. For instance, a character with the Crest of Blaiddyd wielding the lance Gradlon will see enhanced performance.

Crests and Relics are central to the history of Fódlan and the conflicts within the game. They are tied to the lineage of the Nabateans, the ancient inhabitants of the continent, and play a significant role in the motivations of various factions.
