Ship Systems Overview
Understanding and effectively managing your ship's systems is paramount to survival in FTL. Each system plays a crucial role, and knowing how to upgrade, power, and use them will be the difference between a glorious victory and a swift, explosive demise. This section details each primary system, offering actionable strategies for their use and upgrade paths.
Core Systems
- Reactor: This is the heart of your ship's power grid. Every bar of power you allocate to a system comes from your Reactor. Upgrading your Reactor (found under the "Ship Systems and Upgrades" menu) directly increases your total available power. Early game, prioritize enough Reactor power to run your essential systems (Shields, Engines, Weapons) at a basic level. As you acquire new systems or upgrade existing ones, remember to increase your Reactor capacity to match their power demands.
- Piloting: The Piloting system determines your ship's evasion chance. A higher Piloting level, combined with a crew member assigned to the Piloting station, significantly increases your ability to dodge incoming enemy fire. Upgrading Piloting is relatively inexpensive and provides a solid defensive boost. Always keep a crew member stationed here; an unpiloted ship has 0% evasion!
- Sensors: Sensors allow you to see inside enemy ships, revealing their system layouts, crew positions, and even their current health. While not directly combat-oriented, high-level Sensors (Level 2+) are invaluable for tactical decision-making, especially when targeting specific enemy systems or planning boarding actions. Low-level Sensors (Level 1) are sufficient for basic enemy ship information.
- Door System: The Door System controls the integrity and locking mechanisms of your ship's internal doors. Upgrading this system strengthens your doors, making them harder for boarders to break through and more effective at containing fires or venting oxygen. A strong Door System is crucial for managing internal threats and can buy your crew valuable time to respond.
Defensive Systems
- Shields: Your primary defense against projectile weapons. Each power bar allocated to Shields generates one layer of shield, which must be depleted by enemy fire before your hull takes damage. Upgrading Shields allows for more layers, providing greater protection. Prioritize early Shield upgrades (to at least Level 2 or 3) to withstand initial encounters. Remember that certain weapons, like missiles, bypass shields entirely.
- Engines: Engines contribute directly to your ship's evasion chance and also determine your FTL charge time. Higher Engine levels mean faster FTL jumps and a greater chance to dodge enemy attacks. Investing in Engines early can help you escape dangerous situations and reduce damage taken in combat. Assigning a crew member to Engines further boosts evasion.
- Cloaking: A powerful defensive and offensive system. When activated, Cloaking makes your ship temporarily invisible and untargetable by enemy weapons. This allows you to dodge powerful volleys, recharge your own weapons, or escape. Cloaking is a high-cost, high-reward system. Consider acquiring it from stores or event rewards if you have the scrap.
Offensive & Utility Systems
- Weapon Control: This system powers your equipped weapons. Each weapon has a power cost, and your Weapon Control system must provide enough power to activate them. Upgrading Weapon Control increases the total power available for weapons, allowing you to equip and fire more potent armaments. Prioritize upgrading this as you acquire better weapons.
- Medbay: Essential for healing your crew. A powered Medbay allows crew members to recover health when stationed inside. Upgrading the Medbay increases its healing rate. A Level 2 Medbay is often sufficient for most runs, but a Level 3 can be a lifesaver against persistent boarders or environmental hazards.
- Drone Control: Allows you to deploy various types of drones, from defensive Combat Drones to offensive Beam Drones and utility Repair Drones. This system requires power to operate and also consumes Drone Parts for each deployment. Drone Control is a versatile system that can significantly augment your ship's capabilities.
- Crew Teleporter: Enables you to beam your crew members directly onto enemy ships for boarding actions. This is a powerful offensive strategy, especially against ships with weak defenses or critical systems you want to disable quickly. Requires careful micro-management of your crew.
- Artillery Beam: Exclusive to the Federation Cruiser, this powerful system charges over time and fires an unblockable beam across the entire enemy ship, dealing significant damage. It cannot be targeted or disabled by enemies and is a fantastic late-game damage source.
