Teleporter Strategies

The Crew Teleporter is a powerful system that, when used effectively, can turn the tide of battle by allowing you to neutralize enemy ships without destroying them, or even capture them for bonus rewards. Mastering its use requires careful planning and crew management.

Basic Teleporter Operation

Understanding the core mechanics is crucial before diving into advanced tactics:

  1. Power Up: Ensure your Teleporter system has at least one power bar allocated to it. Without power, it's inoperable.
  2. Select Crew: Click on the crew members you wish to teleport. They will automatically move to the Teleporter room on your ship.
  3. Initiate Teleport (Send): With crew in the Teleporter room, click the "Up Arrow" icon above the Teleporter system.
  4. Target Enemy Room: Click on the specific room on the enemy ship where you want your crew to appear. Choose wisely to maximize impact.
  5. Recall Crew (Return): Once your boarding party has completed its objective (or is in danger), click the "Down Arrow" icon. Then, click on the room on the enemy ship where your crew currently resides to bring them back to your ship's Teleporter room.

Important Note: If the "Up Arrow" isn't highlighted, ensure your crew are actually standing in the Teleporter room and the system is powered. If the "Down Arrow" isn't selectable, confirm your crew are still on the enemy ship and in the room you're trying to recall them from.

Optimal Boarding Party Composition

The effectiveness of your boarding strategy heavily depends on the crew you send:

  • Mantis: These are the undisputed champions of boarding. Their 2x combat damage makes them ideal for quickly dispatching enemy crew. A pair of Mantis can often clear an entire ship.
  • Rockmen: While slower, Rockmen boast high health and fire immunity, making them excellent for tanking damage in tough fights or fighting in burning rooms. They are also useful for damaging systems that are on fire without taking damage themselves.
  • Humans: A decent all-rounder, but generally outclassed by specialized combatants. They can be used in a pinch, especially if you have no Mantis or Rockmen.
  • Engi: Avoid sending Engi into direct combat unless absolutely necessary. Their combat prowess is low, and they are better utilized for repairs on your own ship.
  • Zoltan: Extremely fragile in combat. Never send Zoltan to board unless you have no other choice and the enemy ship is already depopulated. Their primary use is power generation.

General Rule: A two-person boarding party is often the most efficient. With a Level 2 Teleporter, you can send three, and a Level 3 allows four, but this requires significant power investment and can leave your own ship vulnerable.

Targeting Enemy Systems and Crew

Where you send your boarders can be as important as who you send:

  • Medbay: Prioritize destroying the enemy Medbay. This prevents enemy crew from healing, making subsequent fights much easier. Once the Medbay is down, enemy crew will often die quickly from sustained damage.
  • Weapons: Disabling enemy weapons early can significantly reduce incoming damage to your ship, allowing you to focus on the boarding action without worrying about your own hull integrity.
  • Shields: Taking down enemy shields allows your ship's weapons to deal direct damage, which can be useful for finishing off the ship or softening up systems for your boarders.
  • Piloting/Engines: Disabling these can prevent the enemy from FTL jumping away, ensuring you get the kill and the rewards.
  • Oxygen: Destroying the Oxygen system can suffocate the enemy crew, especially if they have no Medbay. This is a slower but often safer way to clear a ship.

Advanced Tactics

Beyond basic boarding, consider these strategies:

  • "Hit and Run": Teleport your crew into a critical enemy system (e.g., Weapons or Medbay), deal as much damage as possible, and then immediately recall them before they take too much damage. Repeat as necessary. This is especially effective against ships with strong defenses or dangerous crew.
  • "System Swapping": If your boarders are taking heavy damage in one room, teleport them to an adjacent, less dangerous room (if available) to give them a brief reprieve or to draw enemy crew away.
  • "The Oxygen Drain": If you have a strong boarding party and the enemy ship has a Medbay, consider destroying the Medbay first. Then, target the Oxygen system. As enemy crew try to repair the Oxygen, your boarders can pick them off one by one, or simply let them suffocate.
  • Mind Control Synergy: If you have the Mind Control system, use it on an enemy crew member in a room your boarders are about to enter. The mind-controlled enemy will fight their own crew, creating a distraction and dealing damage, making your boarders' job easier.
  • Hacking Synergy: Hacking an enemy Medbay can turn it into a damage-dealing room for enemy crew, making it a death trap for them. Hacking a system your boarders are attacking can also prevent enemy crew from repairing it.
  • Cloaking Retreat: If your boarders are in dire straits and your ship has the Cloaking system, cloaking can sometimes buy you enough time to recall your crew without them taking fatal damage.

Upgrading Your Teleporter

Investing in Teleporter upgrades significantly enhances its utility:

  • Level 2: Reduces cooldown, allowing for faster recalls and deployments. Crucial for "Hit and Run" tactics and responding to emergencies.
  • Level 3: Further reduces cooldown and allows you to teleport up to three crew members (or four with the Advanced Teleporter augment). This opens up more aggressive boarding strategies.

Augments for Teleporter Builds

Certain augments can greatly enhance your boarding capabilities:

  • Reconstructive Teleport: This augment heals your crew for a small amount each time they teleport. Incredibly powerful for sustaining boarding parties over multiple engagements.
  • Advanced Teleporter: Reduces the Teleporter cooldown and allows an additional crew member to be teleported (up to 4 with a Level 3 Teleporter).
  • Mantis Pheromones: Increases the combat damage of all Mantis crew. Essential for dedicated Mantis boarding ships.
  • Rock Plating: Increases the health of all Rockmen crew. Useful if you're using Rockmen as your primary boarders.

By understanding these mechanics and applying these strategies, you can transform your ship into a formidable boarding vessel, capable of taking down even the toughest enemy ships with minimal damage to your own.
