Environmental Hazards

Beyond the immediate threat of enemy ships, the vastness of space in FTL presents several environmental hazards that can severely impact your ship and crew. Understanding and preparing for these challenges is crucial for survival, often requiring specific ship upgrades, crew management, and tactical adjustments. Ignoring them can lead to rapid hull breaches, system damage, and even crew suffocation.

Asteroid Fields

Asteroid fields are common hazards that pepper your ship with incoming rocks, dealing direct hull damage and potentially damaging systems. These fields often appear in early sectors, but can be encountered throughout your journey.

  • Impacts: Each asteroid impact deals 1 hull damage and has a chance to damage a random system. The frequency of impacts varies.
  • Mitigation:
    • High Evasion: The most effective defense is a high evasion stat. Maxing out your Piloting and Engines systems, and assigning skilled crew members (Piloting skill, Engine skill) to these stations, significantly reduces the chance of being hit.
    • Shields: While shields do not prevent asteroid damage, they absorb incoming enemy fire, allowing your hull to take the asteroid hits. Prioritize keeping shields up.
    • Defense Drones: A Defense Drone I or Defense Drone II can shoot down incoming asteroids, though they prioritize enemy projectiles. They are less reliable against dense asteroid fields.
    • Hull Repair: Always carry Repair Drones or have a Medbay staffed to heal crew members who might take damage from system repairs.
  • Strategy: In asteroid fields, focus on quickly eliminating enemy ships to minimize the duration of exposure. If your evasion is low, consider retreating if the fight is going poorly, as prolonged exposure will inevitably lead to critical damage.

Nebulae

Nebulae are vast clouds of gas and dust that interfere with ship systems, most notably sensors and sometimes weapons. They are often found in specific nebula sectors.

  • Sensor Scrambling: All nebulae scramble your sensors, making it impossible to see enemy ship layouts, system damage, or crew positions. This also affects your ability to target specific rooms with weapons.
  • Ion Storms (Specific Nebulae): Some nebulae contain ion storms, which periodically ionize random ship systems, temporarily disabling them. This can be devastating if critical systems like shields or weapons are hit.
  • Mitigation:
    • Advanced Sensors: Purchasing the Advanced Sensors augmentation (found in stores or as quest rewards) completely negates the sensor scrambling effect of nebulae. This is a highly recommended purchase if you plan to traverse nebula sectors.
    • Backup Battery: A Backup Battery can provide temporary power to critical systems if they are ionized during an ion storm, allowing you to maintain shields or weapons fire.
    • Cloaking: Cloaking can be invaluable in nebulae, allowing you to avoid incoming fire while your systems recover from ionization or to charge up powerful weapons unseen.
    • Crew Management: Ensure your crew is skilled in their respective stations to minimize the impact of temporary system shutdowns.
  • Strategy: In nebulae without Advanced Sensors, engage enemies cautiously. Focus fire on the most visible threats (weapons, shields) and adapt your tactics based on the limited information. If ion storms are present, be prepared for sudden system outages and have a plan for recovery.

Solar Flares

Solar flares are intense bursts of radiation from nearby stars that periodically ignite fires on your ship. These are typically encountered in "Red Giant" or "Pulsar" sectors.

  • Fire Hazard: Solar flares randomly start fires in various rooms on your ship. These fires spread quickly and can damage systems, injure crew, and consume oxygen.
  • Mitigation:
    • Door System Upgrade: Upgrading your Door System is paramount. Level 2 doors significantly slow fire spread, allowing your crew more time to respond. Level 3 doors are even better.
    • Oxygen System: A high-level Oxygen System can quickly re-oxygenate rooms after fires are extinguished, preventing crew suffocation.
    • Medbay: A Medbay is essential for healing crew members who take fire damage.
    • Fire Suppression Drones: While rare, a Fire Suppression Drone can automatically extinguish fires, though it consumes drone parts.
    • Rockmen Crew: Rockmen crew members are immune to fire damage, making them ideal for fire-fighting duties.
  • Strategy: When a solar flare occurs, immediately pause the game. Open internal doors to vent oxygen from burning rooms (if safe to do so without suffocating crew in other areas). Send crew to extinguish fires, prioritizing critical systems. If a room is heavily engulfed, vent it completely and then re-oxygenate once the fire is out. Be prepared for multiple fires to break out simultaneously.

Pulsars

Pulsars are neutron stars that emit powerful energy pulses, periodically ionizing all shields on both your ship and enemy ships. These are found in specific "Pulsar" sectors.

  • Shield Ionization: Every few seconds, a pulsar will ionize all shield layers, rendering them temporarily useless. This affects both you and the enemy.
  • Mitigation:
    • High Damage Output: The best defense is a good offense. Since shields are constantly down, focus on weapons that deal high hull damage quickly, such as Burst Laser II, Heavy Laser I, or Flak I.
    • Cloaking: Cloaking is incredibly powerful in pulsar sectors. You can cloak through the enemy's weapon volley while your shields are down, then unleash your own attack when the pulsar hits again, dropping their shields.
    • Defense Drones (Limited Use): While shields are down, Defense Drones can still shoot down incoming projectiles, offering some protection.
    • Rockmen/Mantis Boarding: Boarding strategies are highly effective in pulsar sectors, as enemy shields are irrelevant. Teleporting Mantis or Rockmen directly into enemy weapons or critical systems can quickly disable them.
  • Strategy: In pulsar sectors, the combat tempo is dictated by the pulsar's pulse. Time your weapon volleys to coincide with the pulsar's shield ionization. If you have Cloaking, use it to negate enemy attacks during the vulnerable periods. Prioritize disabling enemy weapons or teleporters to reduce incoming damage.
