Master Garry's Mod Roleplay (RP) etiquette. Learn to stay in character, avoid metagaming, and respect common RP scenarios on DarkRP servers.

Understanding Roleplay (RP) Etiquette

Garry's Mod roleplay servers, particularly those running DarkRP, thrive on immersive player interaction and adherence to a set of unwritten rules that maintain the illusion of a living world. The core principle is "staying in character" (RP). This means acting, speaking, and making decisions as your chosen character would, regardless of your real-world feelings or knowledge. For instance, if your character is a 'Citizen' and a 'Police Officer' initiates a 'Warrant Check', you must comply and provide the requested information as your character would, rather than breaking character to say "I know you don't have probable cause."

Key Roleplay Mechanics and Rules

Several mechanics are central to RP etiquette. Metagaming, the act of using out-of-character (OOC) knowledge in-character (IC), is strictly forbidden. For example, knowing a player's real name or their character's hidden stash location from an OOC conversation is not allowed. Similarly, Powergaming, which involves forcing actions upon other players without giving them a fair chance to react or resist, is frowned upon. This could include actions like instantly killing someone without any prior interaction or roleplay. When engaging in combat or conflict, always ensure there's a clear roleplay reason for it. The Context Menu (default key 'C') is often used to initiate certain RP actions, such as arresting a player or frisking them, but these actions should always be preceded by appropriate roleplay dialogue.

Common Roleplay Scenarios and Interactions

When interacting with other players, consider the context of their characters and the server's lore. If you encounter a 'Gangster' on a street corner, your 'Citizen' character might choose to avoid them or engage cautiously, rather than immediately provoking a fight. Conversely, if you are playing a 'Law Enforcement Officer', you have a responsibility to uphold the server's laws and maintain order. Always use the appropriate chat channels: 'OOC' for out-of-character communication and 'IC' for in-character dialogue. Many servers have a specific command or chat prefix for OOC, often indicated in the server's welcome message or rules. Respecting other players' roleplay attempts, even if they are not perfectly executed, contributes to a more enjoyable experience for everyone. If you are unsure about a specific rule or interaction, it is best to ask a server administrator or moderator in the desated OOC chat.
