Getting Started & Core Mechanics

Garry's Mod offers immense customization through addons. These can range from sound effect replacements to new NPCs and gamemodes. To enhance your experience, consider installing community-created content. Performance optimization is also key for a smooth gameplay experience, which can be achieved through specific configuration settings and launch options.

To optimize your Garry's Mod performance, follow these steps:

  1. Access Game Properties: Right-click Garry's Mod in Steam and go to "Properties."
  2. Browse Installed Files: Navigate to the "Installed Files" section and click "Browse."
  3. Locate Config Folder: Go to the "garrysmod/cfg" folder.
  4. Edit autoexec.cfg: Open "autoexec.cfg" with a text editor (like Notepad).
  5. Paste Optimization Code: Add the following lines to the file:
    gmod_mcore_test 1
    mat_queue_mode 2
    cl_threaded_bone_setup 1
    cl_threaded_client_leaf_system 1
    r_threaded_client_shadow_manager 1
    r_threaded_particles 1
    r_threaded_renderables 1
    r_queued_ropes 1
    studio_queue_mode 1
    mat_specular 1
    fps_max FRAMERATE
    menu_cleanupgmas
    host_writeconfig
  6. Set Framerate: Replace "FRAMERATE" with your monitor's refresh rate (Hertz) for optimal results.
  7. Find Monitor Hertz (Windows 10):
    • Open Settings (Windows key + i).
    • Go to "Display."
    • Scroll to "Advanced display settings."
    • Choose your monitor if you have multiple.
    • View/adjust "Refresh rate."
  8. Find Monitor Hertz (Windows 11):
    • Open Settings (Windows key + i).
    • Go to "Display."
    • Choose the correct display at the top.
    • Scroll to "Advanced display settings."
    • View/adjust "Choose a refresh rate."
  9. Add Launch Option: In the game's "Properties," under the "General" section, paste +exec autoexec.cfg into the "Launch Options" box.

When launching the game, use the 64-Bit or Garry's Mod option. Addons like "Gamblecore 'I Can't Stop Winning!' Over Good Pills" replace sounds with phrases like "I can't stop winning!" and "Let's be financially responsible!" The "Live Neco Reaction for Curse of the Lost" mod changes the Curse of the Lost icon on the map, but does not work if MiniMAPI is enabled. "Deltarune Explosion - Remake" and "REMASTERED ALIEN: ISOLATION - ALIEN NPC" (featuring a new A.I. Core, animations, and lockers) are also available. For the "[VJ]Vindictus Boss SNPC : Season1" addon to function, the VJ base is required.
