Player Model Animation and Posing Techniques

Garry's Mod offers extensive tools for manipulating player models, allowing for intricate posing and animation sequences. The core of this functionality lies within the Physgun and the Toolgun. To begin posing, spawn a player model from the 'NPCs' tab in the Spawn Menu (Q). Once spawned, select the Physgun. You can then grab individual bones of You model and manipulate them. For more precise control, the Toolgun with the 'Pose' tool is essential. This tool allows you to select specific bones and apply rotations and translations with greater accuracy than the Physgun alone.

To create more complex animations, you can keyframe poses. After setting a pose, you can advance the timeline (often controlled by a separate tool or console commands) and set another pose. The game will then interpolate between these keyframes, creating a smooth animation. Experiment with different bone manipulations to achieve dynamic stances. For instance, posing a character's arms in a 'ready' position, with their legs slightly bent, can convey a sense of anticipation. Similarly, a slumped posture with downcast eyes can represent defeat or sadness. Remember that player models have a finite number of bones, and understanding their hierarchy is key to creating believable movements. For example, manipulating the 'spine' bones will affect the torso, while the 'hand' bones control finger movements.

Common mistakes include over-extending limbs, which can look unnatural, or creating poses that defy gravity without proper support. When posing, consider the character's weight and balance. If you're aiming for a realistic look, ensure that the character's center of gravity is supported. For more advanced users, addons like 'Advanced Bone Merger' can allow for the combination of multiple models' bones, opening up even more creative possibilities for unique character dess and animations. The 'Prop Resizer' tool can also be used in conjunction with posing to create characters of varying sizes, adding another layer of visual storytelling to your creations.
