Backup and Restore Game Data

Optimize your Garry's Mod performance with multi-core support and custom autoexec.cfg settings for a smoother sandbox experience.

Backup and Restore Game Data

To back up your Garry's Mod server data, log in to your website, navigate to "My Servers," and select the desired server. Under the "Administration" menu, click "Backup" and then "Create Backup." The server will temporarily stop during the backup process and restart automatically once completed. This method allows you to create backups of your server's current state.

For optimal game performance, especially with mods, follow these steps:

  1. Install the Chromium Beta:
    • Right-click Garry's Mod in Steam.
    • Select "Properties."
    • Go to the "Betas" section.
    • Choose "x86-64 - Chromium + 64-bit binaries" and wait for installation.
  2. Modify Game Files:
    • Right-click Garry's Mod and go to "Properties."
    • Navigate to the "Installed Files" section and click "Browse."
    • Go to the "garrysmod/cfg" folder.
    • Open "autoexec.cfg" with a text editor.
    • Paste the following code into the file, replacing "FRAMERATE" with your monitor's refresh rate:
    gmod_mcore_test 1
    mat_queue_mode 2
    cl_threaded_bone_setup 1
    cl_threaded_client_leaf_system 1
    r_threaded_client_shadow_manager 1
    r_threaded_particles 1
    r_threaded_renderables 1
    r_queued_ropes 1
    studio_queue_mode 1
    mat_specular 1

    fps_max FRAMERATE
    menu_cleanupgmas
    host_writeconfig
  3. Find Your Monitor Hertz (Optional):
    • Windows 10: Open Settings (Windows key + I) > Display > Advanced display settings. Select your monitor and view/adjust "Refresh rate."
    • Windows 11: Open Settings (Windows key + I) > Display. Choose the correct display, scroll to "Advanced display settings," and look for "Choose a refresh rate."
  4. Add Launch Option:
    • Open Garry's Mod properties again.
    • Go to the "General" section.
    • In the "Launch Options" box, paste: +exec autoexec.cfg

When launching the game, use the "64-Bit" or "Garry's Mod" option.

Some mods, like "Last Judgement," require a game restart upon first installation or toggling to function correctly. This mod aims to restore proposed thoughts, ideas, and concepts. It will not work with most other mods that change backdrops but works with and without StageAPI and Fiend. Other mods include a "golden collection" with 4 new trinkets, 5 new active items, 11 new passive items, 3 new pickups, and a new "Slot" machine. "Tainted Treasure Rooms" add 50 new Tainted Items, requiring you to give up original items. A mod exists to fix a bug with The Ludovico Technique and Brimstone or Technology, which prevented items like The Common Cold, Backstabber, and Head of the Keeper from working. Reskin mods include a joke reskin of the final boss and a resprite of the Bloat based on its Vs. portrait and Four Souls cards, which replaces its anm2 file but has no gameplay changes.
