Troubleshoot Garry's Mod issues by reinstalling. Learn how to uninstall, manually delete files, clear cache, and reinstall for a fresh start.

Reinstalling Garry's Mod

Sometimes, the most effective solution to persistent issues in Garry's Mod is a clean reinstall. Whether you're facing constant crashes, corrupted files, or a game that simply won't launch, a fresh installation can resolve many problems. This process involves completely removing the game from your system and then reinstalling it through Steam, ensuring all old files and configurations are cleared.

Before you begin reinstalling, it's highly recommended to back up any important custom content or configurations you wish to keep. This includes screenshots, saved games, custom maps, and any personally created addons or scripts.

Steps for a clean reinstallation:

  1. Uninstall Garry's Mod:
    • Open your Steam Library.
    • Right-click on Garry's Mod.
    • Select 'Manage' > 'Uninstall'.
    • Confirm the uninstallation.
  2. Manually Delete Remaining Files (Crucial Step):
    • Navigate to your Steam installation folder (usually `C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\`).
    • Locate the 'GarrysMod' folder and delete it entirely. This removes any lingering files that the uninstaller might have missed.
    • Additionally, navigate to your Garry's Mod addon folder (typically `C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\addons\`) and delete any custom addon folders you want to remove. If you want to keep specific addons, back them up elsewhere first.
  3. Clear Steam Download Cache:
    • In Steam, go to 'Steam' > 'Settings' > 'Downloads'.
    • Click 'Clear Download Cache'. You will need to log back into Steam after this.
  4. Reinstall Garry's Mod:
    • Go back to your Steam Library.
    • Find Garry's Mod and click 'Install'.
    • Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
  5. Re-subscribe to Workshop Content: Once Garry's Mod is installed, you can re-subscribe to your desired addons from the Steam Workshop. It's advisable to do this gradually rather than all at once to identify any problematic addons.

A clean reinstall can resolve a wide range of issues, from startup problems and frequent crashes to graphical glitches and performance degradation. If problems persist after a reinstall, the issue might lie with your system drivers, hardware, or a more fundamental conflict outside of Garry's Mod itself.
