Color Tool: Painting Props

The Color Tool is one of the most fundamental and versatile instruments in Garry's Mod, allowing players to dramatically alter the appearance of props and entities. Whether you're aiming for realism, artistic expression, or simply want to differentiate between identical objects, the Color Tool provides an intuitive way to apply custom colors and even change material properties.

To use the Color Tool, you first need to equip it from the Toolgun menu (press 'Q' to open the spawn menu, then navigate to the 'Tools' tab and select 'Color'). Once equipped, aim at the prop you wish to color and hold down the right mouse button to bring up the color selection wheel. This wheel allows you to pick from a wide spectrum of colors.

The Color Tool offers several modes of operation, accessible through the Toolgun's options:

  • Color: This is the default mode, applying a solid color to the entire prop.
  • Material: This mode allows you to change the material of the prop, affecting its texture and how it reacts to light. For example, you could make a wooden crate look like metal or glass.
  • Color + Material: Combines both functions, allowing you to apply a color to a new material.

Furthermore, you can adjust the opacity of the color, making props transparent or semi-transparent. This is incredibly useful for creating glass effects, force fields, or simply fading objects into the background.

Here's a quick guide to using the Color Tool:

  1. Equip the Color Tool from the Toolgun menu.
  2. Aim at the desired prop.
  3. Hold the right mouse button to open the color wheel.
  4. Select your desired color or material.
  5. Adjust opacity if needed.
  6. Left-click to apply the changes.

The Color Tool is essential for scene creation, prop customization, and even functional contraptions where visual distinction is important. Experiment with different colors and materials to bring your creations to life.
