Game Modes
Ghost of Tsushima offers a rich single-player campaign alongside a robust multiplayer experience. Understanding the nuances of each mode will enhance your journey as Jin Sakai, whether you're liberating Tsushima or battling mythical threats with allies.
Single-Player Campaign: The Ghost's Journey
This is the core experience of Ghost of Tsushima, following Jin Sakai's transformation from honorable samurai to the feared Ghost. The campaign is divided into three acts, each focusing on a different region of Tsushima Island.
Main Story Quests
These quests advance the primary narrative and are marked with a gold icon on your map. Prioritizing these will progress the story and unlock new areas, abilities, and companions.
- Act 1: Izuhara - Focuses on Jin's initial resistance against the Mongol invasion and introduces key allies like Yuna and Sensei Ishikawa. Key quests include "The Warrior's Code" and "The Tale of Sensei Ishikawa."
- Act 2: Toyotama - Jin expands his efforts to unite clans against the Mongols. Expect more complex stealth and combat scenarios.
- Act 3: Kamiagata - The final confrontation with Khotun Khan, culminating in epic battles and difficult choices.
Side Tales (Character & Mythic)
Beyond the main story, Tsushima is teeming with side quests that deepen the lore and reward Jin with valuable gear and techniques.
- Character Tales: These are marked with a silver icon and focus on the personal stories of Jin's allies, such as "The Tale of Lady Masako" or "The Broken Blacksmith." Completing these often grants unique charms, armor dyes, or increases your relationship with the character, sometimes unlocking powerful new abilities. For instance, completing Lady Masako's tales can provide insight into her combat style, which subtly influences Jin's own techniques.
- Mythic Tales: These are special, multi-part side quests marked with a blue icon, often involving legendary figures and grand rewards.
- "The Legend of Tadayori": Unlocks Tadayori's Armor, which significantly boosts Concentration and headshot damage. Follow the guiding wind to the marked location in Izuhara, then investigate the musician's tale.
- "The Curse of Uchitsune": Grants the Longbow and the powerful Explosive Arrow technique. Begin this tale in the Hiyoshi Springs region by speaking to the storyteller.
- "The Heavenly Strike": Teaches the devastating Heavenly Strike technique. Look for the musician near the River Falls Bridge in Izuhara.
Exploration & Activities
Tsushima is a vast open world with numerous activities that contribute to Jin's growth and provide cosmetic items.
- Hot Springs: Meditating in hot springs increases Jin's maximum health. There are 18 scattered across the island.
- Bamboo Strikes: Successfully completing these quick-time events increases Jin's Resolve, allowing for more special attacks and healing.
- Fox Dens & Inari Shrines: Following a fox to its den will lead you to an Inari Shrine, where praying will grant you a Charm Slot or upgrade an existing charm. There are 49 Inari Shrines in total.
- Haiko & Pillars of Honor: Haikus provide cosmetic headbands, while Pillars of Honor offer unique sword kits.
- Lighthouses: Relighting lighthouses clears fog from the map and often provides a small amount of XP.
New Game+
After completing the main story, New Game+ becomes available. This mode allows you to restart Jin's journey with all your previously acquired techniques, gear, and upgrades. It also introduces new challenges and rewards:
- Increased Difficulty: Enemies are tougher and more aggressive from the outset.
- New Charms: Exclusive charms like the Charm of Canine Loyalty (summons a dog companion) or the Charm of the Duelist (increases parry window) can be found.
- Ghost Flowers: A new currency earned through various activities, used to purchase exclusive armor dyes, sword kits, and powerful new charms from Baku the Voiceless, a merchant found in Ariake.
- Enhanced Armor Dyes: Many existing armor sets gain new, more elaborate dye options.
Legends Mode (Multiplayer)
Legends is a separate, cooperative multiplayer experience that delves into the mythical folklore of Tsushima. It's accessible from the main menu once unlocked (typically after completing the tutorial section of the single-player campaign).
Classes
Players choose from four distinct classes, each with unique abilities and playstyles:
- Samurai: A frontline warrior, specializing in direct combat and absorbing damage. Ideal for players who enjoy engaging enemies head-on.
- Hunter: A ranged specialist, excellent at crowd control and high-damage critical shots with the bow.
- Ronin: A support class, capable of healing allies and summoning spirit animals to aid in combat.
- Assassin: A stealth-focused class, excelling at silent takedowns and high burst damage from stealth.
Game Types
Legends offers several co-op mission types:
- Story Missions (2 Players): Narrative-driven missions that expand on Tsushima's legends. These are excellent for learning class mechanics and earning initial gear.
- Survival Missions (4 Players): Wave-based defense missions where players must protect specific zones from increasingly difficult enemy waves. Requires strong teamwork and strategic use of class abilities. Look for bonus objectives to earn extra rewards.
- Raid (4 Players): A challenging, multi-chapter raid with unique mechanics and puzzles, requiring significant coordination and communication. The "Tale of Iyo" raid is the primary focus, divided into three chapters.
- Rivals (2 Players): A competitive mode where two teams race to defeat waves of enemies, sending curses to hinder their opponents.
Gear & Progression
In Legends, gear is crucial. You'll earn new weapons, charms, and armor pieces with varying Ki levels and perks. Higher Ki levels indicate more powerful gear. Regularly visit the in-game vendors to reforge gear, reroll perks, and upgrade your favorite items using resources earned from missions.
