Game Modes Overview
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars offers a robust selection of game modes beyond the main story, providing endless hours of mayhem and unique challenges. Mastering these modes is key to achieving 100% completion and truly dominating Liberty City.
Story Mode
This is the core experience of GTA: Chinatown Wars, following Huang Lee's journey through the Triad underworld. Progressing through the main story missions unlocks new areas of Liberty City, vehicles, weapons, and side activities. While the narrative is linear, the open-world nature allows for exploration and engagement with other game modes at your leisure.
- Main Missions: Follow the yellow markers on your GPS to advance the plot. Completing these is essential for unlocking new content.
- Side Missions: Many characters and opportunities will appear on your map as you progress. These often provide valuable cash, unique vehicles, or unlock further activities. Look for colored icons (e.g., blue for Vigilante, red for Rampage).
- Drug Dealing: A central mechanic in Story Mode. Buy low, sell high. Consult your PDA for drug market prices and demand across the five boroughs. This is a primary source of income.
Side Activities & Challenges
Liberty City is brimming with optional activities that offer rewards, boost your stats, and provide a break from the main storyline. Engaging with these is crucial for accumulating wealth, improving combat skills, and achieving 100% completion.
Rampages
These are timed challenges where you must eliminate a set number of gang members or destroy vehicles using specific weapons. Look for the skull icon on your map. There are 30 Rampages scattered across Liberty City.
- Strategy: Before starting, ensure you have full health and armor. Familiarize yourself with the weapon provided and the general area. Prioritize headshots for quicker kills and use cover effectively.
- Rewards: Completing Rampages earns you cash and contributes to your completion percentage.
Vigilante Missions
Hop into any police vehicle (Patrol Car, Enforcer, Rhino) and activate Vigilante mode. Your goal is to track down and eliminate criminals marked on your radar within a time limit.
- Activation: Enter a police vehicle and press the indicated button (often the L or R shoulder button, depending on your console) to start.
- Strategy: Upgrade your armor and weapons at Ammu-Nation. Use the police siren to clear traffic. For higher levels, consider using the Rhino tank for maximum durability and firepower.
- Rewards: Cash rewards increase with each successful level. Completing all levels is required for 100% completion.
Paramedic Missions
Similar to Vigilante, enter an Ambulance and activate Paramedic mode. You'll need to pick up injured citizens and transport them to the nearest hospital before they bleed out.
- Activation: Enter an Ambulance and press the indicated button.
- Strategy: Drive carefully to avoid further injuring patients or damaging the ambulance. Learn efficient routes to hospitals. The timer is often tight, so speed and precision are key.
- Rewards: Cash and increased health capacity upon completion of all levels.
Firefighter Missions
Grab a Fire Truck and put out fires across the city. This mode requires quick navigation and precise aiming of the water cannon.
- Activation: Enter a Fire Truck and press the indicated button.
- Strategy: Prioritize fires that are spreading or near explosive objects. The water stream has a limited range, so position your truck strategically.
- Rewards: Cash and increased fire resistance for Huang.
Taxi Driver Missions
Enter a Taxi and pick up fares, driving them to their destinations within a time limit. Passengers will pay more for faster, smoother rides.
- Activation: Enter a Taxi and press the indicated button.
- Strategy: Avoid collisions and excessive speeding to keep passengers happy and maximize your earnings. Knowing the city layout is a huge advantage.
- Rewards: Cash and the ability to instantly hail a taxi for free once all levels are completed.
Delivery Missions (Mr. Wong's Laundromat)
These missions involve delivering packages for Mr. Wong, often under pressure from rival gangs. They are unlocked after certain story missions.
- Strategy: Use fast, durable vehicles. Be prepared for combat, as rival gangs will often try to intercept your deliveries.
- Rewards: Significant cash payouts and access to new weapons or items.
Stunt Jumps
Scattered throughout Liberty City are unique ramps and opportunities for spectacular jumps. Successfully landing these "Unique Stunt Jumps" earns you cash and contributes to completion.
- Strategy: Use fast vehicles with good suspension. Approach ramps at high speed and try to land cleanly on all four wheels.
- Locations: Refer to in-game maps or online guides for precise locations. There are 30 Unique Stunt Jumps.
Security Cameras
Destroying the 100 security cameras hidden across Liberty City is a major collectible hunt. Each destroyed camera reduces the likelihood of police intervention during drug deals.
- Strategy: Use firearms to shoot them down. They are often placed in elevated or inconspicuous locations. Listen for a distinct buzzing sound when nearby.
- Rewards: Reduced police presence during drug dealing, making it safer and more profitable.
Hidden Packages (Lion Statues)
There are 100 Lion Statues to find and destroy. These act as hidden packages and are often well-concealed.
- Strategy: Use a melee weapon or firearm to destroy them. They are often found in alleys, rooftops, or behind buildings.
- Rewards: Each set of 10 destroyed statues unlocks a new weapon at your safehouse, providing a steady supply of powerful armaments.
Multiplayer Modes
For those looking for competitive action or cooperative play, GTA: Chinatown Wars offers several multiplayer options.
- Deathmatch: Classic free-for-all combat. Last man standing wins.
- Team Deathmatch: Two teams battle it out for supremacy.
- Race: Compete in various vehicle races across custom tracks or pre-set routes.
- Defend the Base: Protect your base from attacking players while trying to destroy theirs.
- Co-op Missions: Work together with a friend to complete specific objectives, often involving escorting targets or eliminating threats.
Multiplayer modes are accessed via the in-game menu or by meeting up with other players in the open world (if playing on a platform that supports local or online multiplayer).
