Weapon Tier List/Recommendations
Welcome to Liberty City, where the streets are mean and a good weapon can mean the difference between a successful drug deal and a trip to the hospital. This section will break down the best tools for mayhem and self-preservation in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, offering a comprehensive tier list and strategies for acquiring and using each weapon effectively.
S-Tier: Absolute Must-Haves
- Flamethrower:
- Description: Unparalleled crowd control and vehicle destruction. Excellent for clearing out groups of gang members or quickly disabling pursuing cars.
- Acquisition: Can be purchased from Ammu-Nation after completing the mission "A Rude Awakening." Keep an eye out for it in weapon crates during later, more intense missions, particularly those involving gang warfare.
- Strategy: Best used when enemies are grouped together. Be mindful of your own proximity to the flames and avoid using it in tight indoor spaces unless you want to become a human torch. Great for setting up chain reactions with explosive barrels.
- Rocket Launcher:
- Description: The ultimate solution for heavily armored vehicles, helicopters, and large groups of enemies. One shot, one kill (usually).
- Acquisition: Becomes available at Ammu-Nation much later in the game, typically after significant story progression. Occasionally found in high-security areas or during specific missions where its use is warranted.
- Strategy: Reserve this for high-priority targets. Aim carefully, as rockets can be slow-moving. Excellent for taking down police choppers during high-star wanted levels.
- Assault Rifle (M4/AK-47):
- Description: High rate of fire, decent accuracy, and good damage make this a versatile weapon for almost any combat situation.
- Acquisition: The M4 is available relatively early at Ammu-Nation. The AK-47, offering slightly more punch, appears later. Both are common drops from defeated gang members and police officers.
- Strategy: Ideal for mid-range engagements. Tap the fire button for controlled bursts to maintain accuracy, or hold it down for maximum suppression. Always keep a healthy supply of ammo for this one.
A-Tier: Highly Recommended & Situationally Powerful
- SMG (Micro SMG/MP5):
- Description: Fast firing, excellent for close-quarters combat and driving-by shootings.
- Acquisition: The Micro SMG is one of the first firearms you'll acquire from Ammu-Nation. The MP5, a more powerful variant, becomes available later.
- Strategy: Perfect for drive-bys due to its high fire rate and ease of use from a vehicle. When on foot, get close to your targets for maximum effect. Less accurate at long range.
- Shotgun (Pump Action/Combat Shotgun):
- Description: Devastating at close range, capable of taking down multiple enemies with a single blast.
- Acquisition: The Pump Action Shotgun is available early at Ammu-Nation. The Combat Shotgun, with its higher capacity and faster firing, appears later.
- Strategy: Essential for clearing out confined spaces or dealing with charging enemies. Get in close, blast, and retreat if necessary. Less effective against distant targets.
- Grenades/Molotovs:
- Description: Explosive and incendiary projectiles for area denial and flushing out enemies.
- Acquisition: Both are available at Ammu-Nation early on. Often found in weapon crates.
- Strategy: Use grenades to clear out entrenched enemies or destroy vehicles. Molotovs are great for creating firewalls or setting enemies ablaze, especially those hiding behind cover. Practice your throwing arc!
B-Tier: Useful, But Niche
- Pistol (9mm/Desert Eagle):
- Description: Your starting firearm, reliable for basic engagements. The Desert Eagle offers significantly more stopping power.
- Acquisition: The 9mm is your default weapon. The Desert Eagle can be purchased from Ammu-Nation after a few missions.
- Strategy: The 9mm is good for conserving ammo on weaker enemies. The Desert Eagle is a solid choice for headshots and taking down individual threats with precision. Generally outclassed by SMGs and Assault Rifles for sustained combat.
- Sniper Rifle:
- Description: Long-range precision weapon, ideal for picking off targets from a distance.
- Acquisition: Available at Ammu-Nation after a good portion of the story. Less common as a drop.
- Strategy: Best used in missions requiring stealth or eliminating specific targets without alerting others. The top-down perspective can make sniping a bit clunky, but it's effective when mastered.
C-Tier: Last Resort / Melee
- Melee Weapons (Baseball Bat, Katana, etc.):
- Description: Close-quarters combat tools. The Katana offers a wider swing and more damage.
- Acquisition: Baseball bats are common. Katanas can be bought from Ammu-Nation or found in specific locations like the Northwood area.
- Strategy: Only use these if you're out of ammo or want to conserve it. They can be surprisingly effective against single, unarmored enemies, especially with a well-timed swing.
Remember, always keep your ammo stocked up by visiting Ammu-Nation or collecting weapon drops from defeated enemies. Experiment with different loadouts to find what suits your playstyle and the mission at hand. Happy hunting, Huang!
