Touchscreen Mini-Games
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars makes extensive use of the Nintendo DS's touchscreen capabilities, integrating various mini-games and interactive elements directly into missions and everyday activities. Mastering these mini-games is crucial for efficient gameplay, mission completion, and even earning some extra cash. This section details the most common touchscreen mini-games and provides strategies to excel at them.
Hotwiring Vehicles
Hotwiring is a frequent mini-game encountered when stealing certain vehicles, especially those that are locked or higher-end models. There are two primary types:
- Screwdriver Hotwire:
- When prompted, drag the screwdriver icon (bottom screen) to the ignition panel (top screen).
- Once the panel is open, you'll see a series of wires. Your goal is to connect the matching colored wires.
- Tap and drag a wire from one side to its corresponding color on the other side.
- Be quick! A timer will be counting down. If you fail, you'll attract police attention (1-star wanted level) and have to try again.
- Strategy: Prioritize the most obvious connections first. If you're struggling, try to remember the common wire pairings. Practice makes perfect, as the layout can vary slightly.
- Circuit Board Hotwire:
- This type involves a small circuit board with a grid of dots.
- You need to connect specific dots by drawing lines between them with your stylus.
- The game will highlight the starting and ending points for each connection.
- Similar to the screwdriver, a timer is active, and failure results in a wanted level.
- Strategy: Focus on drawing straight, precise lines. Sometimes, rotating the DS can give you a better angle for drawing. Don't lift your stylus until the connection is complete.
Assembling Sniper Rifles
Certain missions, particularly those involving assassinations, require you to assemble a sniper rifle on the fly. This mini-game tests your speed and spatial reasoning.
- Steps:
- The disassembled rifle parts will appear scattered on the touchscreen.
- Drag and drop each part into its correct position on the rifle schematic.
- The parts will snap into place when correctly positioned.
- A timer is always present. Failing to assemble the rifle in time will often result in mission failure or a missed opportunity.
- Strategy: Learn the basic shape and location of each component: the stock, barrel, scope, and magazine. The scope usually goes on top, the barrel extends forward, and the magazine attaches underneath. Practice this mini-game whenever it appears to reduce your assembly time.
Molotov Cocktail Crafting
To create Molotov cocktails, you'll need to gather the necessary ingredients and then assemble them using the touchscreen.
- Ingredients: You'll typically need a bottle (empty beer bottles are common), a rag, and gasoline. These can be found in various dumpsters or purchased from certain vendors.
- Crafting Steps:
- Once you have the ingredients, access your inventory and select "Craft Molotov."
- You'll see a bottle on the screen. Drag the rag into the bottle's opening.
- Next, drag the gasoline can icon over the bottle to fill it.
- Finally, light the rag by quickly rubbing your stylus back and forth over the top of the bottle.
- Strategy: The key here is the final step – lighting the rag. A quick, consistent rubbing motion is more effective than slow, deliberate strokes.
Grenade Assembly
Similar to Molotovs, grenades can be assembled from components you find or buy.
- Ingredients: You'll need a grenade casing and explosive powder.
- Assembly Steps:
- Select "Craft Grenade" from your inventory.
- Drag the explosive powder into the grenade casing.
- Then, twist the cap onto the grenade by rotating your stylus in a circular motion.
- Strategy: The twisting motion for the cap needs to be continuous and relatively fast. If you lift your stylus or stop for too long, it won't register.
Dumpster Diving
Dumpsters are a valuable source of cash, weapons, and crafting components. The mini-game involves sifting through trash.
- Steps:
- Approach a dumpster (marked on your map by a specific icon).
- Tap on the dumpster to initiate the search.
- You'll see the inside of the dumpster on the touchscreen, filled with various trash items.
- Drag and move the trash around with your stylus to reveal hidden items underneath.
- Tap on any revealed items to collect them.
- Strategy: Don't just randomly tap. Systematically clear sections of the dumpster by dragging large pieces of trash aside. Look for glinting objects or outlines that indicate hidden items. Some dumpsters are "richer" than others, so remember which ones yield good loot.
Tattooing
While not directly tied to missions, tattooing is a fun way to customize Huang and earn a small amount of money. You'll encounter tattoo parlors in various districts.
- Steps:
- Select a tattoo design from the available options.
- You'll then be presented with an outline of the tattoo on Huang's skin.
- Use your stylus to carefully trace the outline.
- Maintain a steady hand and try to stay within the lines.
- Strategy: Take your time. Precision is more important than speed here. If you go too far outside the lines, the tattoo will be messy, and you'll earn less money or even have to restart.
Drug Dealing (Map & Inventory Management)
While not a traditional "mini-game" in the same vein as hotwiring, the drug dealing mechanic heavily relies on the touchscreen for efficient management.
- Steps:
- Access your PDA (bottom screen).
- Navigate to the "Drug Dealing" app.
- The map will show dealer locations and current drug prices (green for good price, red for bad).
- Tap on dealers to buy or sell drugs.
- Use the inventory screen to manage your stash, seeing quantities and average prices.
- Strategy: This requires constant monitoring of prices and dealer locations. Use the touchscreen to quickly switch between dealers and make transactions. Dragging and dropping drug icons to buy/sell is faster than using the D-pad. Keep an eye on the police presence; some drug deals can attract unwanted attention.
