Safehouses
Safehouses are your lifeline in Liberty City, offering a place to save your progress, heal your wounds, and store your vehicles. As you progress through the story, you'll unlock new safehouses across the city's districts. Prioritize securing these locations to avoid losing valuable progress and to establish strategic respawn points. Each safehouse also provides a unique opportunity to change your appearance, which can be useful for evading law enforcement.
Initially, your safehouse is a humble apartment in Portland. As you complete missions and expand your influence, you'll gain access to more luxurious and strategically positioned safehouses. The first major safehouse unlock after Portland is typically in Staunton Island, followed by Shoreside Vale. These safehouses are crucial for managing your inventory of vehicles and for quick access to healing. Remember to drive your favorite cars into the garage at a safehouse to prevent them from being destroyed or impounded. Some safehouses also offer unique vehicle spawns, such as the Patriot at certain locations, which can be a sturdy option for early-game combat.
The act of saving is tied directly to entering your safehouse. Upon entering, you'll see a prompt to save your game. It's a good habit to save frequently, especially after completing challenging missions or acquiring valuable items. Beyond saving, safehouses serve as a sanctuary. If you're heavily injured, simply entering your safehouse will begin a slow health regeneration process. This can be a lifesaver when you're low on cash for health packs or can't find a hospital. Furthermore, some safehouses allow you to change your outfit, which can temporarily alter your wanted level or simply provide a cosmetic change. Keep an eye out for new safehouse icons on your radar as you explore Liberty City; they are marked with a house icon.
