The Fire Truck is a specialized vehicle in Grand Theft Auto III that, beyond its primary function of extinguishing fires, offers unique gameplay opportunities and a specific mission set. While not the fastest or most agile vehicle, its robust nature and the ability to spray water make it useful for certain tactical situations and a key component of the Firefighter side missions.

Acquiring the Fire Truck

Fire Trucks are typically found parked at fire stations across Liberty City. There are fire stations in Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale. You can also sometimes find them responding to active fires.

Locations of Fire Stations

  • Portland: Near the Callahan Tunnel entrance and in the industrial district.
  • Staunton Island: In the downtown area, often near the hospital.
  • Shoreside Vale: Near the airport and in the main town area.

Initiating the Firefighter missions requires entering a Fire Truck and pressing the desated button. These missions are a great way to earn money and unlock benefits.

Firefighter Missions and Payouts

The Firefighter missions involve driving the Fire Truck to locations where fires have broken out and using the water cannon to extinguish them. Each successfully extinguished fire awards cash, with payouts increasing as you progress through the levels. Completing all 20 levels of the Firefighter missions grants Claude immunity to fire damage, a highly valuable perk.

Mission Level Approximate Payout Objective
1-5 $100 - $500 Extinguish small fires.
6-10 $600 - $1,000 Deal with multiple fires, larger blazes.
11-15 $1,100 - $1,500 More complex scenarios, fires near vehicles.
16-20 $1,600 - $2,000+ Intense fires, often requiring precise aiming.

Tactical Uses of the Fire Truck

Beyond missions, the Fire Truck's water cannon can be used creatively:

  • Extinguishing Enemy Vehicles: While not its primary purpose, spraying water on burning vehicles can sometimes prevent them from exploding prematurely, potentially saving nearby structures or yourself.
  • Clearing Paths: In some rare instances, the water spray might slightly push smaller objects or clear minor debris.
  • Distraction: The large size and distinctive nature of the Fire Truck can draw attention, potentially diverting police focus.

Limitations

The Fire Truck is slow and cumbersome, making it unsuitable for high-speed chases or quick getaways. Its large size also makes it an easy target for heavy weaponry. The water cannon has a limited range and requires careful aiming.

Unlocking Fire Immunity

The reward for completing all 20 levels of the Firefighter missions is immunity to fire damage. This means Claude will not take damage from fires, explosions, or lava, making certain missions and activities sificantly easier and safer. This benefit alone makes the Firefighter missions a worthwhile endeavor.
