Introduction to Liberty City
Welcome to Liberty City, a sprawling metropolis inspired by New York City, and the primary setting for your journey as Niko Bellic. This guide will help you navigate its boroughs, understand its mechanics, and make the most of your time in this concrete jungle.
Navigating the City
Liberty City is divided into several distinct boroughs, each with its own character, landmarks, and challenges. Initially, many areas will be locked off due to storyline progression, but you'll eventually gain full access.
- Broker: Your starting point, inspired by Brooklyn. This borough is home to Niko's cousin Roman and his taxi business. Key areas include Hove Beach, South Slopes, and Outlook Park. Expect to spend your early game here, learning the ropes and establishing your criminal connections.
- Dukes: Modeled after Queens, Dukes features a mix of residential and industrial zones. It connects directly to Broker and is often the next area you'll explore as the story unfolds.
- Bohan: The Bronx equivalent, Bohan is a smaller, more densely packed borough known for its grittier atmosphere. Access to Bohan typically opens up after completing a few missions in Broker and Dukes.
- Algonquin: The heart of Liberty City, inspired by Manhattan. This is where the towering skyscrapers, bustling commercial districts, and high-end establishments are located. Algonquin is usually unlocked later in the game, signifying a significant progression in Niko's criminal career.
- Alderney: Based on New Jersey, Alderney is the westernmost borough, characterized by its industrial areas, suburban sprawl, and a large port. This area becomes accessible as the story progresses into its later stages.
Essential Mechanics and Early Game Tips
Before diving deep into the criminal underworld, familiarize yourself with these fundamental game mechanics:
- Phone Usage: Your mobile phone is crucial. It's used for receiving mission calls, contacting friends for activities (like bowling or darts), and even calling a taxi. Early on, Roman will frequently call you for missions and social outings.
- Saving Your Game: Always save your progress! The primary way to save is by returning to your safehouse and interacting with the bed. Your first safehouse is located in Hove Beach, Broker, above Roman's Taxi Depot. Look for the yellow house icon on your minimap.
- Health and Armor: Keep an eye on your health bar. You can restore health by eating at fast-food joints (like Cluckin' Bell or Burger Shot), drinking soda from vending machines, or picking up health packs. Armor vests significantly reduce incoming damage and can be purchased from Ammu-Nation stores or found in specific locations.
- Weapons: You'll start with just your fists, but acquiring weapons is essential. Early weapons like the Pistol can often be found after completing missions or by disarming enemies. Ammu-Nation stores, marked by a gun icon on the map, are your go-to for purchasing a wider array of firearms, ammunition, and body armor. The first Ammu-Nation you'll likely encounter is in East Island City, Dukes.
- Vehicle Acquisition: Grand Theft Auto is synonymous with stealing cars. Simply approach a parked vehicle or one being driven, and press the appropriate action button to commandeer it. Be mindful of police presence, as stealing a car in front of an officer will immediately earn you a wanted level.
- Wanted Levels: Attracting police attention will result in a wanted level, indicated by stars on your HUD. To lose the police, you must escape their line of sight and remain hidden until the stars flash and disappear. Driving into Pay 'n' Spray garages (paint can icon on the map) can also remove a wanted level for a small fee, provided you don't have too many stars.
Initial Walkthrough Steps
Your first few hours in Liberty City will be guided by Roman. Follow these steps to get started:
- Arrival and First Mission: The game begins with Niko arriving at the docks in Broker. Follow Roman to his taxi and drive to his apartment in Hove Beach. This serves as your first safehouse.
- "Bleed Out" Mission: Roman will immediately send you on your first mission, "Bleed Out." Head to the designated location, the basketball court in Hove Beach, to confront some loan sharks. This mission introduces basic combat mechanics.
- "Easy Fare" Mission: After "Bleed Out," Roman will task you with your first taxi fare. Drive the customer to their destination. This mission introduces driving mechanics and the mini-map navigation.
- Explore Your Safehouse: Between missions, take time to explore your safehouse. Interact with the bed to save your game. You can also change clothes from your wardrobe.
- Socializing: Roman will frequently call you for social activities. While not always mandatory for 100% completion, maintaining good relationships with friends can unlock special abilities (e.g., Roman's taxi service for free rides).
Remember, Liberty City is a living, breathing world. Take your time, explore, and don't be afraid to experiment. The city holds many secrets and opportunities for those willing to look.
