Collectibles Checklist
Achieving 100% completion in Grand Theft Auto IV requires more than just finishing the main story missions. You'll need to track down various collectibles scattered across Liberty City. This section provides a detailed checklist and strategies to help you find every last one, ensuring you don't miss out on those coveted completion bonuses and achievements.
Pigeon Hunting (200 Pigeons)
The most extensive collectible hunt in GTA IV involves exterminating 200 flying rats, or pigeons, hidden throughout Liberty City. These aren't just for target practice; eliminating all of them contributes significantly to your 100% completion and unlocks the "Liberty City Minute" achievement. Pigeons are often found in obscure locations, such as on ledges, under bridges, on rooftops, or tucked away in alleys. They emit a distinct cooing sound when you are nearby, which can be a crucial audio cue for their location.
- Strategy:
- Early Game Preparation: While you can start hunting pigeons as soon as you gain access to different islands, it's often more efficient to wait until you've unlocked all three islands (Broker/Dukes, Bohan, Algonquin, and Alderney) and have access to a helicopter.
- Weapon Choice: A sniper rifle is ideal for pigeons on high ledges or distant rooftops. For closer targets, a pistol or SMG will suffice.
- Map Resources: Utilize an online interactive map or a dedicated pigeon map. There are numerous community-made maps that pinpoint the exact location of all 200 pigeons. Mark off each pigeon as you find it to avoid re-checking areas.
- Island by Island: Tackle the pigeons island by island, or even borough by borough, to maintain a systematic approach. Starting with Broker and Dukes, then Bohan, followed by Algonquin, and finally Alderney, is a common and effective method.
- Helicopter Advantage: Once you have access to a helicopter (e.g., from the helipad in Bohan or Algonquin), many pigeons on rooftops or elevated structures become much easier to spot and shoot. Fly slowly and methodically over building tops.
- Sound Cues: Always listen for the distinct cooing sound. This is your primary indicator that a pigeon is nearby, even if you can't immediately see it.
- Reward: Eliminating all 200 pigeons unlocks the "Key to the City" achievement and grants you a special weapon spawn at your safehouses (usually an SMG and some health).
Unique Stunt Jumps (50 Jumps)
Liberty City is filled with ramps, broken bridges, and natural inclines perfect for performing spectacular stunt jumps. There are 50 unique stunt jumps scattered across the city, each requiring you to hit a specific ramp at speed and land in a designated area. Successfully completing all 50 is a requirement for 100% completion and earns you the "Dare Devil" achievement.
- Strategy:
- Vehicle Choice: A fast, durable vehicle is essential. Sports cars like the Turismo, Comet, or Banshee are excellent choices. Motorcycles can also be effective for certain jumps due to their maneuverability, but they offer less protection during landings.
- Approach Speed: Most jumps require significant speed. Ensure you have a long, clear run-up to the ramp.
- Landing Zone: Pay attention to the intended landing zone. Simply clearing the jump isn't enough; you must land safely within the designated area for it to count. Sometimes, a perfect landing involves rotating your vehicle in mid-air for style, but the primary goal is a clean touchdown.
- Trial and Error: Don't get discouraged if you don't nail a jump on the first try. Many require precise speed, angle, and sometimes even a bit of luck.
- Map Guidance: Use a detailed map that marks the location of each stunt jump and, ideally, shows the optimal approach and landing zones.
- Progress Tracking: The game tracks your progress for stunt jumps. You can check how many you've completed in the Stats menu under "Stunt Jumps."
- Reward: Completing all 50 unique stunt jumps unlocks the "Dare Devil" achievement.
Most Wanted Missions (30 Targets)
After unlocking the police computer in a police cruiser, you can access the "Most Wanted" list. There are 30 targets across Liberty City (10 per main island) that Niko must track down and eliminate. These missions are straightforward bounties, contributing to your overall completion.
- Strategy:
- Accessing Missions: Enter any police vehicle and press the appropriate button to access the police computer. Select "Most Wanted" from the menu.
- Target Information: The computer will display a picture and a last known location for your target.
- Engagement: Drive to the indicated area. The target will usually be in a vehicle or on foot with a small entourage. Be prepared for a firefight.
- Elimination: Your goal is to eliminate the target. You can use any means necessary. Be mindful of your wanted level, as these missions often attract police attention.
- Island Progression: The Most Wanted targets are divided by island. You'll complete 10 in Broker/Dukes, 10 in Bohan, and 10 in Algonquin/Alderney. You must complete all 10 on one island before the next set becomes available.
- Reward: Completing all 30 Most Wanted missions contributes to your 100% completion.
Vigilante Missions (20 Criminals)
Similar to Most Wanted, Vigilante missions are accessed via the police computer. Instead of specific targets, you'll be tasked with apprehending or eliminating random criminals across the city. You need to complete 20 Vigilante missions to contribute to 100% completion.
- Strategy:
- Initiation: Get into a police vehicle, access the computer, and select "Vigilante."
- Mission Types: Missions vary, from stopping fleeing vehicles to taking down drug dealers or gang members.
- Pursuit and Takedown: Engage the criminals. Some will flee, requiring a car chase, while others will fight back.
- Wanted Level Management: Be aware that engaging in Vigilante missions will often raise your wanted level. Have a plan for escaping the police afterward.
- Consecutive Missions: You can complete multiple Vigilante missions consecutively without leaving the police vehicle.
- Reward: Completing 20 Vigilante missions contributes to your 100% completion.
