Exploration & Points of Interest

Liberty City is a vast, living, breathing metropolis, and while the main story missions will guide you through many of its iconic locales, true immersion comes from venturing off the beaten path. This section details key points of interest, hidden collectibles, and strategies for making the most of your free-roaming experience.

Unlocking the City

Initially, your access to Liberty City will be restricted. Broker and Dukes are available from the start, but you'll need to progress through the main storyline to unlock the other boroughs:

  • Algonquin: Unlocked after completing the mission "Blow Your Cover" for Elizabeta Torres. This opens up the central island with its towering skyscrapers and bustling districts.
  • Alderney: Becomes accessible after completing "A Long Way to Fall" for Ray Boccino. This western borough offers a grittier, industrial feel with its own unique challenges and opportunities.

Once unlocked, bridges and tunnels will no longer be blockaded by the LCPD, allowing for seamless travel across the entire city.

Hidden Package Collectibles: Pigeons

Scattered throughout Liberty City are 200 flying rats, or rather, pigeons, that serve as this game's primary collectible. Eliminating all of them is crucial for 100% completion and unlocks a special reward.

Strategy for Pigeon Hunting:

  1. Weapon of Choice: A good sniper rifle (like the Combat Sniper or the standard Sniper Rifle) is invaluable for distant targets. For closer pigeons, a Carbine or even a Pistol will suffice. Always carry plenty of ammo.
  2. Map Reference: Utilize an online map or a dedicated in-game guide that marks the precise locations of all 200 pigeons. Attempting to find them without a guide is an exercise in futility.
  3. Systematic Approach: Tackle one borough at a time. Start with Broker, then Dukes, Algonquin, and finally Alderney. Within each borough, follow a logical path (e.g., clockwise, or district by district) to minimize backtracking.
  4. Listen and Look: Pigeons often make a distinct cooing sound. Keep your ears open. They can be found on rooftops, ledges, signs, under bridges, and even on small islands.
  5. Save Frequently: After clearing a significant number of pigeons in an area, save your game. There's nothing worse than finding 20 pigeons only to die and lose your progress.

Reward:

Upon eliminating all 200 pigeons, you will unlock the Annihilator helicopter at the helipad in the northeast corner of Algonquin, near the Booth Tunnel entrance. This powerful attack helicopter comes equipped with a minigun and rockets, making it a formidable vehicle for causing chaos or simply enjoying the aerial views.

Unique Stunt Jumps

There are 50 Unique Stunt Jumps scattered across Liberty City. Successfully completing all of them is another requirement for 100% completion.

Tips for Stunt Jumps:

  • Vehicle Choice: A fast, durable vehicle is essential. Sports cars like the Comet, Infernus, or Turismo are ideal. Motorcycles (NRG 900, PCJ 600) can also be effective for certain jumps, offering better maneuverability.
  • Speed is Key: Most jumps require significant speed to clear the gap or land correctly. Hit the ramp at full throttle.
  • Landing Zone: Pay attention to where you need to land. Sometimes, simply clearing the jump isn't enough; you need to land cleanly on all four wheels (or both for a motorcycle) in a specific area.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Don't get discouraged if you don't nail a jump on the first try. Many require precise alignment and speed.
  • Map Guidance: As with pigeons, consult a map that highlights the locations and ideal approach vectors for each stunt jump.

Random Character Encounters

As you explore Liberty City, you'll occasionally encounter unique individuals marked by a blue person icon on your radar. These are "Random Characters" who offer short, often humorous, side missions. There are 10 such characters, some of whom appear multiple times.

Notable Random Characters:

  • Badman: Found in Broker, near Niko's first safehouse. He'll ask for help with various tasks, often involving gang violence.
  • Brian: A drug addict found in Broker. His encounters are often tragic and highlight the darker side of Liberty City.
  • Dwayne Forge: Appears in Algonquin after certain story missions. He's a former gang leader looking for a fresh start, and his missions often involve dealing with his past.
  • Jeff: A paranoid and unstable individual found in Algonquin. His missions are some of the most disturbing in the game.

Completing all random character encounters is necessary for 100% game completion. Some characters will only appear after specific main story missions are completed or after a certain amount of in-game time has passed.

Activities and Leisure

Beyond the main missions and collectibles, Liberty City offers a wealth of activities to engage in:

  • Bowling: Take your friends (or dates) to the bowling alley. A perfect game can boost your relationships.
  • Darts: Found in various pubs across the city, darts is a simple but enjoyable mini-game.
  • Pool: Another pub staple, playing pool can be a good way to pass the time and improve your aim.
  • Cabaret Clubs: Visit the Split Sides comedy club in Algonquin for stand-up routines, or the Honkers strip club for some adult entertainment.
  • Restaurants & Fast Food: Grab a bite at Cluckin' Bell, Burger Shot, or a more upscale restaurant to restore health and boost relationships.
  • Internet Cafes: Access the in-game internet to check emails, read news, and even find new vehicles or jobs.
  • TV: Head back to your safehouse and relax with some Liberty City television programming – a surprisingly entertaining satire of real-world media.

Engaging in these activities with your friends and girlfriends will improve your relationships, often unlocking special abilities or perks, such as free car repairs from Roman or discounted weapons from Little Jacob.
