Property & Safehouses
Safehouses are your personal havens in Liberty City Stories, providing essential services like saving your game, changing outfits, and storing vehicles. Acquiring additional safehouses strategically across the city is crucial for efficient mission-running and exploring, reducing travel time significantly. This section details all available safehouses, their locations, and how to acquire them.
Understanding Safehouse Functionality
Each safehouse offers the following core utilities:
- Save Point: Step into the spinning floppy disk icon to save your current game progress. Always save before undertaking risky missions or after completing a significant objective.
- Wardrobe: Access the wardrobe icon (usually a shirt) to change into any outfits you've unlocked throughout the game. Different outfits can sometimes affect gang notoriety or mission outcomes.
- Garage: Most safehouses come with a garage where you can store up to two vehicles. This is invaluable for keeping rare or customized cars safe from destruction or despawning. Park a vehicle fully inside the garage and exit it to store it.
- Weapon Pickups: Some safehouses, particularly those acquired later in the game or through specific missions, may offer free weapon pickups or health packs. Always check your safehouse for these bonuses.
Starting Safehouse: Portland View
Your journey in Liberty City begins with a free safehouse in Portland View, Portland Island. This is your initial base of operations and will be where you return frequently in the early stages of the game.
- Location: Portland View, Portland Island. It's easily identifiable on your map by the house icon.
- Acquisition: Automatically available from the start of the game.
- Features: Standard save point, wardrobe, and a two-car garage.
- Strategy: Utilize this safehouse extensively during the Portland Island missions. Keep a fast car stored here for quick getaways or mission starts.
Additional Safehouses & Acquisition
As you progress through the storyline and unlock new islands, more safehouses become available for purchase. Investing in these properties is highly recommended for convenience and strategic advantage.
Staunton Island Safehouses
Once Staunton Island becomes accessible (after completing the "Driving Mr. Leone" mission), you can purchase two additional safehouses.
- Newport Safehouse
- Location: Newport, Staunton Island. Situated on the eastern side of Newport, near the ferry terminal.
- Acquisition: Available for purchase for $10,000. Look for the "For Sale" sign and the house icon on your map once Staunton Island is open.
- Features: Standard save point, wardrobe, and a two-car garage.
- Strategy: This safehouse is strategically located for missions in Newport, Fort Staunton, and the northern parts of Staunton Island. It's a good first purchase on Staunton.
- Torrington Safehouse
- Location: Torrington, Staunton Island. Found in the southern part of Torrington, close to the bridge leading to Shoreside Vale.
- Acquisition: Available for purchase for $20,000. This will appear on your map after unlocking Staunton Island.
- Features: Standard save point, wardrobe, and a two-car garage.
- Strategy: Ideal for missions in Torrington, Bedford Point, and preparing for the eventual unlock of Shoreside Vale. Its proximity to the bridge makes it excellent for quick transitions between islands later on.
Shoreside Vale Safehouses
Upon unlocking Shoreside Vale (after completing the "Rough Justice" mission), two more safehouses become available, offering complete coverage across Liberty City.
- Pike Creek Safehouse
- Location: Pike Creek, Shoreside Vale. Located in the central-western area of Pike Creek, not far from the airport.
- Acquisition: Available for purchase for $30,000. The "For Sale" sign and map icon will appear once Shoreside Vale is accessible.
- Features: Standard save point, wardrobe, and a two-car garage.
- Strategy: Essential for missions in Pike Creek and the surrounding industrial areas. It provides a convenient save point before tackling airport-related missions or challenges.
- Wichita Gardens Safehouse
- Location: Wichita Gardens, Shoreside Vale. Situated in the residential district of Wichita Gardens, in the eastern part of Shoreside Vale.
- Acquisition: Available for purchase for $40,000. This is typically the last safehouse you'll acquire due to its higher price and location.
- Features: Standard save point, wardrobe, and a two-car garage.
- Strategy: Perfect for missions in Wichita Gardens, Cedar Grove, and the southern regions of Shoreside Vale. Having a safehouse here completes your network, ensuring you're never too far from a save point or garage.
Maximizing Your Safehouse Network
- Financial Planning: Prioritize purchasing safehouses as soon as you have the funds. The convenience they offer far outweighs their cost in the long run. Consider doing some side missions or vigilante activities to earn the necessary cash.
- Vehicle Storage: Always keep valuable or mission-specific vehicles in your garages. This includes unique cars, armored vehicles, or simply your preferred mode of transport. Remember, each garage holds two vehicles.
- Strategic Saving: Develop a habit of saving frequently, especially before difficult missions or after completing a long series of objectives. This prevents losing significant progress if you fail a mission or get wasted/busted.
- Outfit Changes: Experiment with different outfits. While not as impactful as in some other GTA titles, certain outfits can subtly alter how NPCs react to you or are required for specific mission triggers.
