Character Customization
While Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories doesn't offer the deep character creation systems found in later Grand Theft Auto titles, you can still personalize Toni Cipriani's appearance to a significant degree. Changing Toni's outfits isn't just for aesthetics; certain missions or areas might subtly react to your attire, and it's a great way to express your style as you navigate the treacherous streets of Liberty City.
Where to Customize
Toni can change his clothes at any of his safehouses. Simply walk into the designated wardrobe icon (a spinning shirt) within your safehouse to access the clothing menu. As you progress through the game and unlock new islands, more safehouses become available, each offering the same customization functionality.
- Portland Safehouse: Located in Saint Mark's, Portland. This is your first safehouse and where you'll begin your customization journey.
- Staunton Island Safehouse: Found in Torrington, Staunton Island. Unlocked after progressing through the main storyline and gaining access to Staunton Island.
- Shoreside Vale Safehouse: Situated in Wichita Gardens, Shoreside Vale. Becomes available once you've unlocked Shoreside Vale.
Unlocking New Outfits
The majority of Toni's wardrobe is unlocked by completing specific story missions. Pay close attention to mission rewards, as new clothing options are often a direct result of your criminal endeavors. Some outfits might also be tied to side activities or hidden achievements, encouraging exploration and completion of all that Liberty City has to offer.
Default Attire
Toni starts the game in his standard, unassuming outfit. This includes a simple shirt, trousers, and shoes. While functional, you'll quickly want to upgrade to something more stylish or intimidating.
Story Mission Unlocks
As you complete missions for various crime families and influential figures, new outfits will become available in your wardrobe. Here are some examples of outfits you can expect to unlock:
- Leone's Suit: A sharp, respectable suit often associated with the Leone family. Unlocked early in the game, it projects an image of authority and seriousness. Ideal for making an impression or attending more formal (by Liberty City standards) meetings.
- Forelli's Suit: A distinct suit, potentially with different color schemes or patterns than the Leone's Suit, reflecting the rival Forelli family's aesthetic. Unlocked after completing missions related to the Forelli family.
- Workman's Outfit: A more casual, rugged ensemble, possibly including overalls or a work jacket. This can be useful for blending in with the working class or for missions that require a less conspicuous appearance.
- Casual Wear: Various combinations of t-shirts, jeans, and jackets that offer a more relaxed look for Toni. These are typically unlocked progressively as you complete a range of missions.
- Special Outfits: Keep an eye out for unique outfits that might be tied to specific, memorable missions or characters. These often have a distinct flair and can be a fun way to commemorate your progress.
Strategies for Customization
- Match the Mood: Consider the mission you're about to undertake. A formal suit might be appropriate for a delicate negotiation, while a more rugged outfit could be better for a high-octane chase or a street brawl.
- Personal Preference: Ultimately, choose what makes Toni look and feel like your version of a Liberty City gangster. Experiment with different combinations as they unlock.
- Completionist Goal: For players aiming for 100% completion, unlocking all outfits is a small but satisfying part of the journey. check your wardrobe after completing significant story arcs.
