While Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is primarily a single-player experience, the PSP version uniquely offered a robust multiplayer mode for up to six players via Ad-Hoc wireless connection. This guide will walk you through setting up and dominating the streets of Liberty City with your friends.

Setting Up a Multiplayer Game

To initiate a multiplayer session, all players must be within range of each other and have a PSP system with Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories inserted. There is no online matchmaking; all connections are local Ad-Hoc.

1. From the main menu, select "Multiplayer".
2. One player must choose "Host Game" to create a session.
3. The host can then select a game mode from the available options (detailed below).
4. Other players will choose "Join Game" and select the host's session from the list.
5. Once all players have joined, the host can start the game.

Important Note: Ensure all players have the same game version to avoid compatibility issues. Lag can occur with more players or if players are at the edge of the Ad-Hoc range.

Multiplayer Game Modes

LCS offers several distinct multiplayer modes, each with its own objectives and strategies:

1. Liberty City Survivor (Deathmatch)

This is the classic free-for-all deathmatch. The goal is simple: eliminate as many opponents as possible within the time limit or until a kill count is reached. You with the most kills wins.

• Strategy:
  • Weapon Control: Focus on securing powerful weapons like the Rocket Launcher (often found in Staunton Island, near the stadium or the construction site) or the M4 (frequently spawns in Shoreside Vale, near the airport).
  • Vehicle Advantage: Use fast vehicles like the Banshee or Infernus for quick getaways and hit-and-run tactics. Ramming opponents can be surprisingly effective.
  • Armor & Health: Prioritize picking up Body Armor and Health Packs. These are often found in alleyways, under bridges, or near weapon spawns. Knowing their locations is crucial for survival.
  • Environmental Awareness: use cover, elevated positions, and choke points to your advantage. The rooftops of Staunton Island can offer excellent sniping opportunities with a Sniper Rifle.

2. Protection Racket (Team Deathmatch)

Two teams battle it out to protect their designated vehicle while destroying the opposing team's vehicle. The first team to destroy the other's vehicle wins.

• Strategy:
  • Teamwork is Key: Designate roles. One or two focus on defending your team's vehicle, while others go on the offensive.
  • Defensive Positions: Park your team's vehicle in a less exposed area, perhaps an alley or under an overhang, and set up a perimeter. Use Molotov Cocktails or Grenades to deter approaching enemies.
  • Offensive Weapons: The Rocket Launcher and Flamethrower are devastating against vehicles. Coordinate attacks to overwhelm the enemy's defenses.
  • Vehicle Choice: If you're on offense, consider a durable vehicle like a Patriot or Enforcer to absorb damage while you get close to the enemy's target.

3. Get Stretch (Capture the Flag)

Teams compete to steal the opposing team's vehicle (the "stretch") and return it to their base. The first team to capture the enemy's stretch a set number of times wins.

• Strategy:
  • Balanced Approach: Similar to Protection Racket, a mix of offense and defense is vital.
  • Scout Routes: Learn the fastest and safest routes to the enemy's base and back to your own. Avoid main roads if possible to minimize exposure.
  • Vehicle Hijacking: When going for the enemy's stretch, use a fast, expendable vehicle to get there, then quickly switch to their stretch. Have teammates clear the path for the return journey.
  • Roadblocks: Defenders can set up roadblocks with their own vehicles or use explosives to create obstacles for the enemy's stretch carrier.

4. Street Rage (Race)

Players race through a series of checkpoints across Liberty City. The first player to cross the finish line wins.

• Strategy:
  • Vehicle Selection: Choose a fast and agile vehicle. The Banshee, Infernus, or even a well-driven PCJ-600 motorcycle can be excellent choices depending on the track.
  • Know the Course: Practice makes perfect. Familiarize yourself with the race routes in single-player free roam to gain an advantage.
  • Aggressive Driving: Don't be afraid to ram opponents off the road, but be careful not to damage your own vehicle too much.
  • Shortcuts: Look for opportunities to cut corners or take hidden paths, but be wary of potential hazards or dead ends.

5. Tanks for the Memories (Tank Battle)

Players spawn in tanks and battle it out in a destructive free-for-all. The last player standing or You with the most kills wins.

• Strategy:
  • Armor Management: Your tank can take a lot of damage, but it's not invincible. Avoid getting surrounded.
  • Strategic Positioning: Use buildings and terrain for cover. Ambush opponents from unexpected angles.
  • Explosive Barrels: Look for explosive barrels scattered around the map. Shooting them when an enemy tank is nearby can deal significant damage.
  • Ramming: While less effective than the main cannon, ramming can disorient opponents and push them into vulnerable positions.

6. The Exchange (Bag Capture)

Players compete to collect money bags that spawn randomly across the map and deliver them to designated drop-off points. You with the most money delivered wins.

• Strategy:
  • Fast Vehicle: A quick car or motorcycle is essential for rapid bag collection and delivery.
  • Map Awareness: Keep an eye on your radar for new bag spawns and drop-off locations.
  • Defensive Driving: Expect other players to try and intercept you. Drive defensively and use evasive maneuvers.
  • Ambush Points: Consider waiting near drop-off points to ambush players carrying multiple bags.

General Multiplayer Tips

• Communication: If possible, communicate with your teammates (in team-based modes) to coordinate strategies.
• Weapon Spawns: Learn the locations of powerful weapon spawns (e.g., Rocket Launcher, M4, Sniper Rifle) and control them.
• Vehicle Spawns: Similarly, know where desirable vehicles spawn.
• Health & Armor: Always be on the lookout for Health Packs and Body Armor to stay in the fight longer.
• Minimap Use: Constantly check your minimap for enemy positions, objective markers, and item spawns.
• Practice: The best way to improve is to play! Experiment with different vehicles, weapons, and strategies.
