Gang Warfare / Turf Wars
As you progress through the story of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, you'll inevitably become embroiled in the city's vicious gang warfare. Taking over rival gang territory is not only a great way to earn some extra cash but also a crucial step towards achieving 100% completion. This guide will walk you through the mechanics of turf wars and provide strategies to dominate Liberty City's streets.
Initiating a Turf War
Turf wars become available after completing the mission "Rough Justice" for Salvatore Leone. You'll notice certain areas on your radar highlighted in different colors, representing the territories controlled by various gangs:
- Red: Leone Family (your gang)
- Blue: Sindacco Family
- Green: Forelli Family
- Yellow: Triads
- Purple: Diablos
To start a turf war, you need to drive into a rival gang's territory and provoke them. The easiest way to do this is to simply shoot at three or more rival gang members in their turf. Once enough gang members are dispatched, a message will appear, and the area on your map will begin to flash, indicating an active turf war.
Winning a Turf War
Once a turf war begins, waves of enemy gang members will spawn and attempt to reclaim their territory. Your objective is to eliminate all of them. Here's a breakdown of the process and effective strategies:
Preparation is Key
Before initiating a turf war, always ensure you are well-equipped:
- Armor: Always have full body armor. You can purchase it from Ammu-Nation or find pickups around the city.
- Weapons: Stock up on powerful weapons. The Shotgun, SMG, and Assault Rifle are excellent choices for close-quarters combat. Molotov Cocktails or Grenades can also be useful for clearing groups of enemies.
- Health: Grab any health pickups you can find, or visit a fast-food joint like Cluckin' Bell for a quick health boost.
- Vehicle: A sturdy vehicle can provide cover and a quick escape if things get too hot. However, be prepared to fight on foot as gang members will often try to pull you out.
Combat Strategies
During the turf war, focus on these tactics:
- Stay Mobile: Don't stand still. Keep moving to avoid being surrounded and to find cover.
- Headshots: Aim for headshots to take down enemies quickly and conserve ammo.
- Utilize Cover: Use cars, walls, and other environmental elements for cover. Pop out, fire, and retreat to safety.
- Watch Your Radar: Enemy gang members will appear as red dots on your radar. Pay attention to their positions to avoid being flanked.
- Prioritize Threats: Some gang members might be armed with more powerful weapons. Prioritize taking them out first.
- Health and Armor Pickups: During a turf war, small health and armor pickups may occasionally spawn in the contested area. Keep an eye out for them, especially if you're taking heavy damage.
Taking Over Territory
After successfully eliminating all waves of rival gang members, the territory will turn red on your map, signifying that it is now under Leone Family control. You will also receive a cash reward for your efforts. The more territory you control, the more money you'll earn passively over time.
Defending Your Turf
Once you've taken over a territory, rival gangs may attempt to reclaim it. You'll receive a notification on your screen if one of your territories is under attack. You have a limited time to respond and defend it. If you fail to defend it, the territory will revert to the control of the attacking gang.
- Respond Quickly: If you get a notification, immediately head to the contested territory.
- Similar Mechanics: Defending your turf works similarly to taking it over – eliminate all waves of attacking gang members.
- Strategic Importance: While not mandatory for 100% completion, defending your turf helps maintain your income and dominance in Liberty City.
Gang-Specific Considerations
Each gang has slightly different characteristics:
- Sindacco Family: Often found in Staunton Island. They tend to use pistols and SMGs.
- Forelli Family: Primarily in Staunton Island. Similar to Sindaccos in weaponry.
- Triads: Located in Portland. Known for their use of melee weapons (cleavers) in addition to firearms.
- Diablos: Found in Portland. Often use pistols and baseball bats.
Be aware of the typical weapons and numbers of each gang when planning your attacks. Mastering turf wars is essential for becoming the undisputed kingpin of Liberty City!
