Wanted Level Mechanics
In Liberty City Stories, the police are always on high alert, and any criminal activity will quickly draw their attention. Understanding the Wanted Level system is crucial for survival and mission success. The more stars you accumulate, the more aggressive and numerous the law enforcement response becomes.
Understanding Wanted Levels
Your Wanted Level is indicated by the stars displayed in the top right corner of your screen. Each star represents an increased level of police presence and determination to apprehend Toni Cipriani.
- 1 Star: Minor infractions like hitting a pedestrian or a police car. Patrol cars will pursue you.
- 2 Stars: More serious crimes, such as shooting a weapon in public or carjacking in front of an officer. Police cars will actively chase and attempt to ram your vehicle.
- 3 Stars: Engaging in firefights, killing multiple civilians, or prolonged evasion. SWAT teams will be deployed, often arriving in Enforcers. Roadblocks will also appear.
- 4 Stars: Major rampages, destroying police vehicles, or resisting arrest for an extended period. The FBI will join the pursuit, utilizing their faster FBI Cars and more heavily armed agents.
- 5 Stars: Extreme violence and destruction. The National Guard will be called in, deploying heavily armored Barracks OL vehicles and soldiers armed with M4s.
- 6 Stars: Utter chaos and widespread destruction. Expect an overwhelming response from all law enforcement agencies, including tanks and relentless pursuit.
Reducing Your Wanted Level
Evading the police is a core mechanic. Here are several strategies to shake off the heat:
1. Lay Low and Evade
The most common method is to simply escape the immediate vicinity of the police. The blue and red flashing circles on your radar indicate the presence of law enforcement. Drive or run away from these circles until your Wanted Level stars begin to flash. Once they are flashing, you need to remain out of sight for a short period until they disappear completely. This is often easiest in a fast vehicle.
2. Pay 'n' Spray
For a quick and reliable way to lose all Wanted Stars (up to 4 stars), drive any vehicle into a Pay 'n' Spray garage. These are marked by a spray can icon on your radar. The cost is usually around $100.
- Portland: Located in Saint Mark's, near the Callahan Bridge entrance.
- Staunton Island: Found in Torrington, close to the Newport Ammu-Nation.
- Shoreside Vale: Situated in Pike Creek, just south of the Francis International Airport.
Note: Pay 'n' Spray will not work if you are on foot or if your Wanted Level is 5 stars or higher.
3. Wanted Level Pickups
Throughout Liberty City, you can find flashing police badge icons. Picking these up will instantly reduce your Wanted Level by one star. These are often strategically placed in alleys or less conspicuous areas. Keep an eye on your radar for these helpful items, especially when in a pinch.
- Example Location (Portland): There's often one in the alley behind Momma's Restaurante in Saint Mark's.
- Example Location (Staunton Island): Look near the entrance to the Staunton Island ferry terminal in Rockford.
4. Changing Vehicles
While not as effective as a Pay 'n' Spray, rapidly switching to a different vehicle can sometimes help confuse the police, especially at lower Wanted Levels. However, if they have a direct line of sight, this will be less successful.
5. Safehouses
Entering one of your safehouses (marked by a house icon on the radar) will instantly remove all Wanted Stars. This is a reliable method, but often requires you to travel a significant distance, which can be challenging under heavy pursuit.
- Portland: Your initial safehouse in Saint Mark's.
- Staunton Island: The safehouse in Newport.
- Shoreside Vale: The safehouse in Wichita Gardens.
6. Mission-Specific Reductions
Some missions will automatically clear your Wanted Level upon completion or at specific checkpoints. Pay attention to mission objectives and dialogue for these instances.
Advanced Evasion Tactics
- Utilize Terrain: Drive off-road, through parks, or down narrow alleys where police vehicles struggle to follow.
- Water Escapes: If you can reach a boat, the police will have a much harder time pursuing you on water.
- Destroy Pursuers: While risky, destroying police vehicles can temporarily thin their numbers, but it will also increase your Wanted Level if witnessed. Use weapons like the Shotgun or AK-47 for vehicle destruction.
- Hide in Plain Sight: At lower Wanted Levels, sometimes simply parking your car and waiting in a secluded spot can work, especially if you're out of their line of sight.
Mastering these techniques will ensure Toni can navigate the dangerous streets of Liberty City with greater ease, even when the law is hot on his heels.
