Glitches & Exploits
While Liberty City Stories offers a robust experience, a few quirks and unintended mechanics can be leveraged to your advantage, or simply to witness some bizarre occurrences. This section details some of the most notable glitches and exploits discovered within the game.
Money & Item Exploits
Infinite Money from Vehicle Destruction
This exploit allows you to generate a significant amount of cash early in the game, particularly useful for purchasing weapons or properties.
- Acquire a Vehicle: Any vehicle will do, but a durable one like a Patriot or Barracks OL is recommended for repeated attempts.
- Locate a Pay 'n' Spray: The most accessible one is usually in Portland View, Portland Island, near the Saint Mark's Bistro.
- Damage the Vehicle: Drive erratically, crash into objects, or shoot the vehicle until it starts smoking heavily. The goal is to get it to the point of imminent explosion.
- Enter the Pay 'n' Spray: Just before the vehicle explodes, drive it into the Pay 'n' Spray garage.
- Observe the Payout: As the garage door closes and the vehicle is repaired, you will receive a cash bonus for "destroying" the vehicle, despite it being repaired. The amount varies but can be substantial.
- Repeat: Exit the Pay 'n' Spray, damage the now-repaired vehicle again, and re-enter for another payout. You can repeat this as many times as desired.
Weapon Duplication (PSP/PS2 Specific)
This trick can be used to duplicate certain weapons, ensuring you always have a full stock.
- Equip Desired Weapon: Select the weapon you wish to duplicate (e.g., Shotgun, AK-47).
- Find a Vehicle: Any car or motorcycle will work.
- Perform Drive-by (PSP): While holding the weapon, enter the vehicle and immediately perform a drive-by shooting (by holding L + R + Circle on PSP, or L1 + R1 + Circle on PS2). As you begin the drive-by animation, quickly exit the vehicle.
- Observe Duplication: If timed correctly, you will exit the vehicle, and the weapon you were holding will be dropped on the ground, while you still retain the weapon in your inventory with full ammo.
- Collect and Repeat: Pick up the dropped weapon for extra ammo, or leave it to despawn and repeat the process for more.
Note: Timing is crucial for this exploit. It may take several attempts to master.
Environmental & Physics Glitches
Invisible Wall Climb (Staunton Island)
This glitch allows you to access certain out-of-bounds areas or gain an advantageous position.
- Travel to Staunton Island: Head towards the Fort Staunton area.
- Locate the Construction Site: Find the large construction site with scaffolding and partially built structures.
- Identify the Invisible Wall: Look for specific corners or edges of unfinished buildings where the game's collision detection is imperfect. Often, these are near the perimeter walls or large concrete blocks.
- Attempt to Climb: Repeatedly jump against these specific corners. With precise positioning and timing, Toni can sometimes "catch" on an invisible ledge and ascend the wall as if it were a ladder.
- Explore: Once on top, you can explore inaccessible rooftops or areas, though be mindful of falling off.
Vehicle Launch Glitch (Portland)
A fun, though not always practical, physics exploit that can send vehicles flying.
- Acquire a Fast Vehicle: A Banshee or Stinger is ideal.
- Head to the Portland Docks: Drive to the Atlantic Quays area in Portland Island.
- Locate the Cargo Cranes: Find the large, yellow cargo cranes.
- Position Your Vehicle: Drive your vehicle at high speed directly into the base of one of the crane's support beams, specifically where the beam meets the ground at an acute angle.
- Observe the Launch: If hit at the right speed and angle, your vehicle can be launched high into the air, sometimes across the entire dock area or even into the water. This is purely for entertainment and can be difficult to replicate consistently.
Character & AI Anomalies
Pedestrian Swarm (Any Location)
This isn't a direct exploit but a common visual glitch that can occur.
- Trigger a High Wanted Level: Attain a 4-star or higher wanted level by causing significant mayhem (destroying vehicles, shooting pedestrians, etc.).
- Enter a Vehicle: Get into any car.
- Drive to a Crowded Area: Head towards busy streets or public spaces like Saint Mark's or the Red Light District.
- Observe the Swarm: Occasionally, the game's AI will struggle to despawn and respawn pedestrians correctly under high stress, leading to an unusually high density of identical pedestrian models congregating in one spot, often clipping into each other. This is purely visual and doesn't typically impact gameplay.
