Unlike later Grand Theft Auto titles, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories does not feature extensive visual or performance customization for vehicles in the traditional sense. You won't find dedicated mod shops like Pay 'n' Spray offering a menu of upgrades. However, there are crucial ways to "upgrade" and maintain your vehicles, which are essential for surviving the mean streets of Liberty City.

Vehicle Repair and Resprays (Pay 'n' Spray)

The primary method for "upgrading" your vehicle's condition and evading the law is through the Pay 'n' Spray garages. These establishments will repair any damage to your vehicle and, more importantly, change its color, which instantly removes any Wanted Level you currently have.

How to Use Pay 'n' Spray:

Locate a Pay 'n' Spray: These are marked on your radar as a spray can icon. They are strategically placed across all three boroughs of Liberty City.
- Portland: There's a Pay 'n' Spray located in the Red Light District, near the waterfront.
- Staunton Island: You'll find one in Torrington, close to the casino.
- Shoreside Vale: A convenient Pay 'n' Spray is situated in Pike Creek, not far from the airport.
Drive Your Vehicle In: Simply drive your damaged or wanted vehicle into the garage bay.
Pay the Fee: A small fee of $50 will be deducted from your cash. This is a worthwhile investment, especially when escaping a high Wanted Level.
Exit with a Fresh Ride: Your vehicle will emerge fully repaired and sporting a new paint job, with your Wanted Level completely gone.

Strategy Tip: Always keep an eye on your mini-map for the nearest Pay 'n' Spray when you have a Wanted Level. Knowing their locations can be the difference between a successful escape and a bust or death. For missions requiring a specific vehicle to be delivered in good condition, a quick stop at Pay 'n' Spray before the final delivery point can save you from mission failure.

Bulletproof and Explosion-Proof Vehicles

While you cannot apply these upgrades at will, certain missions in Liberty City Stories will provide you with vehicles that are inherently bulletproof, explosion-proof, or both. These are invaluable for tougher missions and can significantly alter your approach to combat situations.

Identifying Special Vehicles:

Mission-Specific Vehicles: Pay close attention to mission briefings. If a mission provides you with a specific vehicle, especially one that needs to survive heavy combat, it often has enhanced durability.
Testing Durability: If you're unsure about a vehicle's resilience, a quick test (e.g., firing a few rounds at it from a distance, or driving carefully into a minor collision) can give you an idea of its toughness. However, be cautious not to damage it beyond repair if it's crucial for a mission.

Strategy Tip: When you acquire a bulletproof or explosion-proof vehicle during a mission, consider saving it in one of your safehouse garages if the mission allows. While the game doesn't explicitly support permanent storage of these specific properties, some players have reported that certain mission-spawned vehicles retain their special properties if stored correctly. This can be a game-changer for subsequent difficult missions or simply for causing mayhem with less risk.

Garage Storage (Safehouses)

Your safehouse garages serve as a crucial "upgrade" system for your vehicle collection. While they don't add performance enhancements, they allow you to store and protect your favorite vehicles from despawning or being destroyed permanently.

How to Use Garages:

Locate Your Safehouse: Each borough has at least one safehouse with a garage.
- Portland: Your first safehouse is in Saint Mark's.
- Staunton Island: A safehouse is available in Newport.
- Shoreside Vale: Another safehouse can be found in Wichita Gardens.
Drive Vehicle Inside: Simply drive any vehicle you wish to keep into the garage door.
Retrieve Later: The vehicle will be saved and can be retrieved whenever you visit that safehouse.

Strategy Tip: Use your garages to store rare vehicles, fast sports cars, or even emergency vehicles like ambulances or fire trucks. Having a reliable vehicle readily available at your safehouse can save you time and money, especially if you frequently find yourself needing a quick getaway or a specific type of transport.
