Swimming & Diving
Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto titles, CJ is not instantly drowned upon contact with deep water. This opens up an entirely new dimension of exploration and mission opportunities within San Andreas. Mastering swimming and diving is crucial for accessing hidden collectibles, completing specific missions, and escaping unwanted attention from the law or rival gangs.
Swimming Basics
To enter the water, simply walk or run into any body of water deep enough to cover CJ. You'll automatically transition into a swimming animation.
- Surface Swimming: Use the left analog stick (or W/A/S/D on PC) to control CJ's direction. Repeatedly tap the X button (PlayStation) or A button (Xbox) to swim faster. Be mindful of your stamina bar (the blue bar on the HUD); continuous fast swimming will deplete it quickly. If your stamina runs out while far from shore, CJ will drown.
- Stamina Management: Your swimming speed and endurance are directly tied to your Stamina stat. The higher your Stamina, the longer you can swim at full speed. To improve Stamina, simply swim frequently. Early in the game, stick to shorter swims or stay close to shore.
- Exiting Water: To exit the water, swim towards any shallow area or climbable bank. CJ will automatically pull himself out.
Diving & Underwater Exploration
Diving allows CJ to submerge himself and explore the depths of San Andreas's lakes, rivers, and oceans. This is essential for retrieving hidden packages and completing certain side activities.
- Initiating a Dive: While surface swimming, hold down the Circle button (PlayStation) or B button (Xbox) to dive underwater.
- Underwater Movement: Use the left analog stick (or W/A/S/D on PC) to control CJ's direction while submerged. You can move forward, backward, and strafe.
- Ascending/Descending: To swim upwards, hold the X button (PlayStation) or A button (Xbox). To swim downwards, hold the Square button (PlayStation) or X button (Xbox).
- Oxygen Management: While underwater, a separate blue oxygen bar will appear on your HUD. This bar depletes over time. If it runs out, CJ will begin to drown and lose health rapidly.
- Surfacing: To surface quickly, hold the X button (PlayStation) or A button (Xbox) and direct CJ upwards. Alternatively, simply stop holding any movement buttons and CJ will slowly float to the surface.
Improving Your Lung Capacity
Your ability to stay underwater is governed by your Lung Capacity stat. A higher Lung Capacity means a longer oxygen bar and more time for underwater exploration.
- Training Lung Capacity: The primary way to increase Lung Capacity is by repeatedly diving and staying underwater until your oxygen bar is nearly depleted, then surfacing to refill it. Repeat this process.
- Optimal Training Spots:
- Verona Beach, Los Santos: The shallow waters near the pier are a safe and accessible place to practice diving without fear of deep-sea dangers.
- Fisher's Lagoon, Red County: This calm lake offers clear water and ample space for extended underwater training.
- Ocean Docks, Los Santos: Once you're more comfortable, the deeper waters around the docks can provide more challenging training opportunities.
- Benefits of High Lung Capacity: Maxing out your Lung Capacity will allow you to stay submerged for extended periods, making it easier to collect all 50 Oysters scattered across San Andreas without constantly needing to surface.
Underwater Collectibles: Oysters
Scattered across the various bodies of water in San Andreas are 50 hidden Oysters. Collecting all of them provides several significant benefits:
- Increased Sex Appeal: Each Oyster collected boosts CJ's Sex Appeal stat.
- Max Lung Capacity: Collecting all 50 Oysters instantly maxes out CJ's Lung Capacity, making underwater exploration effortless.
- Dating All Girlfriends: After collecting all Oysters, all potential girlfriends will be available to date, regardless of CJ's other stats.
- Immunity to Drowning: Once all Oysters are collected and Lung Capacity is maxed, CJ becomes immune to drowning. You can stay underwater indefinitely!
Refer to the "Oyster Locations" section of this guide for a detailed map and descriptions of each Oyster's whereabouts.
Advanced Swimming Tips
- Escaping the Cops: Water can be an excellent escape route. If you have a decent Stamina and Lung Capacity, diving into the ocean or a large lake can often shake off even persistent police chases, especially if you can get out of their line of sight.
- Vehicle Recovery: If a vehicle falls into shallow water, you can sometimes swim to it and re-enter, provided it's not too deep and hasn't been submerged for too long.
- Beware of Boats: While swimming, be cautious of boats and other watercraft. They can run CJ over, causing significant damage or even death.
- Sharks (Myth vs. Reality): While there are rumors of sharks in the deeper oceans of San Andreas, rest assured, CJ will not encounter any hostile marine life. The only real danger underwater is running out of oxygen.
