Understanding Wanted Levels
Navigate the law's pursuit with the Wanted Level system. Learn how police react to your actions, how to evade them, and the different tiers of law enforcement you'll face. Mastering evasion is key to continuing your criminal enterprise.
The Wanted Level system in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a dynamic representation of how the police and other law enforcement agencies perceive your criminal activities. As you commit crimes, your Wanted Level will increase, escalating the response from the authorities. Understanding how this system works, and more importantly, how to evade it, is fundamental to surviving and thriving in the game world.
How Wanted Levels Increase:
Your Wanted Level increases based on the severity and visibility of your crimes. Common actions that will attract police attention include:
- Driving recklessly (speeding, running red lights, hitting pedestrians).
- Assaulting pedestrians or police officers.
- Stealing vehicles.
- Using firearms in public.
- Committing major crimes like bank robberies or assassinations.
The more chaos you cause, the higher your Wanted Level will climb.
Wanted Level Tiers and Police Response:
The Wanted Level is represented by stars on your screen, ranging from one to six. Each star sifies an escalation in the police response:
| Stars | Law Enforcement Response | Typical Vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| ★ | Initial police attention. Patrol cars may approach cautiously. | Patrol Cars |
| ★★ | More aggressive police presence. Patrol cars will pursue and attempt to ram you. | Patrol Cars, Police Motorcycles |
| ★★★ | Increased police numbers and pursuit tactics. Helicopters may appear. | Patrol Cars, Police Helicopters |
| ★★★★ | SWAT teams may deploy roadblocks and engage in shootouts. More aggressive helicopter presence. | Patrol Cars, Police Helicopters, SWAT Vans, SWAT Officers |
| ★★★★★ | FBI units join the pursuit, employing more advanced tactics and vehicles. Roadblocks become more frequent and dangerous. | Patrol Cars, Police Helicopters, SWAT, FBI Rancher, FBI Truck |
| ★★★★★★ | The highest level. Military intervention, including tanks and roadblocks, will attempt to stop you. This is the most dangerous level. | Patrol Cars, Police Helicopters, SWAT, FBI, Military Vehicles (Rhino Tank) |
Evading the Police:
Successfully evading the police is a critical skill. Here are some effective strategies:
- Outrun Them: For lower Wanted Levels, simply driving fast and erratically can often be enough to lose pursuers. Use shortcuts and avoid main roads where police presence is higher.
- Hide: Find a secluded spot, such as an alleyway, a tunnel, or a parking garage, and wait for the police to lose sight of you. If you remain hidden long enough, your Wanted Level will gradually decrease.
- Change Vehicles: Stealing a new vehicle can sometimes help break the police's line of sight and make them lose track of you.
- Use Pay 'n' Sprays: These shops, marked on the map with a spray can icon, will repaint your vehicle and remove your Wanted Level instantly. However, they cannot be used if you have a 5 or 6-star Wanted Level.
- Underwater Evasion: If you're near water, driving into it can sometimes help you lose pursuers, especially if you can find a way to get out of the vehicle and swim underwater.
- Use the Environment: Utilize ramps, jumps, and the general layout of the city to your advantage. Breaking line of sight by going over hills or through buildings can be effective.
Remember, the goal is to break line of sight and remain undetected for a period. The longer you can avoid being seen by the police, the faster your Wanted Level will drop. Mastering the Wanted Level system and evasion techniques will allow you to commit crimes with greater impunity.
