Boats & Watercraft
While San Andreas is famous for its cars and planes, don't overlook the vast waterways that crisscross the state. Boats and other watercraft offer unique mission opportunities, exploration potential, and a fantastic way to escape the law or simply enjoy the scenery. Mastering these aquatic vehicles can open up new strategies and hidden areas.
General Watercraft Tips
- Water Skill: Just like driving and flying, CJ has a "Boat Skill" stat. The higher your boat skill, the better CJ will handle watercraft, allowing for tighter turns and higher speeds without losing control. Practice makes perfect!
- Weapon Use: Most boats allow you to use drive-by weapons (pistols, SMGs) while operating them. This is crucial for certain missions and fending off attackers.
- Damage & Sinking: Boats can take damage just like cars. Excessive damage will cause them to catch fire and eventually sink, leaving CJ stranded in the water. Always be mindful of your vehicle's health.
- Police & Coast Guard: The police will pursue you on water if you commit crimes. The Coast Guard (distinct from regular police boats) will also give chase, often in faster, more heavily armed vessels.
Types of Watercraft & Locations
Speedboats
These are your go-to for fast travel across open water. They offer good speed and maneuverability, making them ideal for quick getaways or covering long distances.
- Speeder: A sleek, fast speedboat.
- Locations: Commonly found docked at marinas in Los Santos (e.g., Santa Maria Beach pier), San Fierro (e.g., Easter Basin), and Las Venturas (e.g., near the Pirates in Men's Pants casino). Often spawns during specific missions requiring water travel.
- Strategy: Excellent for outrunning most police boats. Be careful with sharp turns at high speeds, as you can easily spin out.
- Squalo: A slightly larger and more robust speedboat, often with a small cabin.
- Locations: Less common than the Speeder, but can be found at larger docks and yacht clubs, particularly in richer areas of Los Santos and San Fierro. Sometimes appears during later missions.
- Strategy: Offers a bit more stability than the Speeder, good for navigating choppier waters or when you need a slightly more durable vessel.
Utility & Fishing Boats
These boats are generally slower but offer different advantages, such as carrying capacity or specific mission roles.
- Dinghy: A small, inflatable boat. Surprisingly nimble for its size.
- Locations: Often found near smaller fishing docks, remote beaches, and sometimes even in canals within cities. Look around the docks in Fisher's Lagoon (Red County) or the small inlets around Bayside Marina (Tierra Robada).
- Strategy: Great for navigating tight waterways and sneaking into areas. Its small profile can make it harder for enemies to hit.
- Predator: The standard police patrol boat. Equipped with a mounted machine gun (though CJ cannot use it).
- Locations: Primarily seen patrolling the waters when you have a wanted level. Can be stolen from police docks, such as the one in Easter Basin, San Fierro, or the Los Santos Naval Base (requires high wanted level or careful infiltration).
- Strategy: While you can't use its weapon, it's a durable boat for escaping. Be wary of other Predators, as they will fire upon you.
- Coastguard: A larger, more powerful version of the Predator, often seen in open waters.
- Locations: Spawns specifically when you have a high wanted level (3+ stars) while on water. Very difficult to steal without significant firepower.
- Strategy: Avoid at all costs if you're wanted. Their speed and durability make them a serious threat.
- Tropic: A luxury yacht, more for show than speed.
- Locations: Found docked at high-end marinas, particularly in Santa Maria Beach (Los Santos) and near the Gant Bridge (San Fierro).
- Strategy: Slow and cumbersome, not ideal for missions or escapes. Primarily for role-playing or cruising.
Personal Watercraft
For a more personal and agile experience on the water.
- Jetmax: A personal watercraft, essentially a jet ski. Extremely fast and maneuverable.
- Locations: Commonly found on beaches, especially Santa Maria Beach (Los Santos), and sometimes at smaller docks. Often available during the "Boat School" missions.
- Strategy: Perfect for weaving through obstacles, performing stunts, and quick short-distance travel. Be careful not to hit land at high speeds, as CJ will be thrown off.
Boat School
To truly master watercraft, you'll want to complete the Boat School. This optional side activity is highly recommended for improving CJ's Boat Skill and earning some cash.
- Location: The Boat School is located in Tierra Robada, specifically at Bayside Marina, just south of the Gant Bridge. Look for the red marker on your map.
- Lessons: There are several lessons, each focusing on different aspects of boat handling, including:
- 360: Learn to perform a complete turn.
- Naval Manoeuvres: Practice navigating through buoys.
- Anchors Aweigh: Learn to stop quickly.
- Docking: Master precision docking.
- Circle Airstrip: A longer course testing speed and control.
- Catching Waves: Practice riding the waves without losing control.
- Rewards: Achieving at least a bronze medal in all lessons will significantly boost your Boat Skill. Gold medals in all lessons will unlock the Marquis yacht at the nearby dock, a luxurious boat for leisurely cruises.
Notable Water-Based Missions
Several main story and side missions will require you to utilize boats effectively:
- "Pier 69" (San Fierro): Involves a boat chase and shootout. Mastering the Speeder or Squalo is crucial here.
- "Amphibious Assault" (Los Santos): Requires CJ to swim underwater and use a Dinghy for infiltration. Pay attention to your lung capacity!
- "Interdiction" (Tierra Robada): You'll be piloting a speedboat to intercept a plane dropping packages into the water. Precision driving and quick thinking are key.
