The San Andreas Police Department (SAPD) and other law enforcement agencies are a constant threat to CJ's criminal endeavors. Mastering the art of evading the police and managing your Wanted Level is a fundamental skill for survival and success in the game.
Understanding the Wanted Level
Your Wanted Level is indicated by stars in the top right corner of your screen. The more stars you have, the more aggressive and numerous the police response will be. The levels are as follows:
- 1 Star: A single police car may patrol the area, and officers will approach you if you commit a crime.
- 2 Stars: More police cars will actively pursue you.
- 3 Stars: Police helicopters will join the chase, and roadblocks may be set up.
- 4 Stars: SWAT teams will deploy, armed with shotguns and tear gas.
- 5 Stars: The military, including tanks, will be deployed to apprehend you.
- 6 Stars: The highest level, sifying a state-wide manhunt with overwhelming force.
Evasion Tactics
When the heat is on, your primary goal is to break line of sight and disappear. Here are effective strategies:
- Speed and Maneuverability: Fast cars and motorcycles are your best friends. Utilize alleys, shortcuts, and off-road paths to lose pursuers.
- Breaking Line of Sight: Drive into tunnels, under bridges, or through buildings where possible. The police will lose track of you if they cannot see you for a sustained period.
- Pay 'n' Spray: The quickest way to reduce your Wanted Level. Drive into a Pay 'n' Spray (marked with a spray can icon on the map) and remain inside until the paint job is complete. This will remove one star from your Wanted Level.
- Changing Vehicles: If you can ditch your current vehicle and steal a new one, it can sometimes help confuse the police.
- Hiding: In some areas, particularly in rural or less populated locations, you can find spots where police are less likely to search.
- Weaponry: While not a direct evasion tactic, having powerful weapons can help you fight your way out of difficult situations, though this will likely increase your Wanted Level further.
Preventing Wanted Levels
The best defense is a good offense. Try to commit crimes when you are less likely to be seen, or when you have a clear escape route planned. Avoid excessive speeding or reckless driving in populated areas if you wish to remain undetected.
