Tagging Up Turf
Reclaiming the streets for the Grove Street Families is a core component of your journey as CJ. This section details how to effectively tag up turf, expand your gang's influence, and dominate Los Santos.
Understanding Turf Wars
Turf wars become available after the mission "Doberman." You'll notice areas on your map highlighted in different colors:
- Green: Grove Street Families territory. These are your safe zones.
- Red: Ballas territory. These are your primary targets for conquest.
- Yellow: Vagos territory. Another rival gang, also ripe for taking over.
- Purple: San Fierro Rifa territory. Found later in the game, primarily in San Fierro.
- Light Blue: Da Nang Boys territory. Also found later, in San Fierro.
- Dark Blue: Mafia territory. Found in Las Venturas.
To initiate a turf war, you must enter enemy territory (red or yellow on the map) and kill at least three rival gang members. This will trigger a notification and the area will begin to flash. Be prepared for a fight!
Preparing for Battle
Before you roll into enemy territory, preparation is key. A well-equipped CJ is a successful CJ.
- Weapons:
- Assault Rifles: The AK-47 and M4 are your best friends. High damage and good range.
- SMGs: The MP5 and TEC-9 are excellent for close-quarters combat and drive-bys.
- Shotguns: The Combat Shotgun is devastating at short range.
- Grenades/Molotovs: Useful for clearing out groups of enemies or flushing them out of cover.
- Armor: Always pick up Body Armor before engaging. You can find it at Ammu-Nation or various pick-up spots around the city.
- Health: Stock up on snacks from vending machines or visit a Cluckin' Bell or Burger Shot for a quick health boost.
- Recruit Gang Members: Press Up on the D-Pad (or equivalent key on PC) when near a Grove Street Family member to recruit them. You can recruit up to two members early on, and more as your Respect stat increases. They provide valuable backup.
- Vehicle: A sturdy vehicle like a Greenwood or a Sabre can offer cover and a quick escape if things go south.
The Three Waves of Conquest
Once a turf war is initiated, you'll face three waves of increasingly difficult enemy gang members. The objective is simple: eliminate all rival gang members in the flashing area.
- Wave 1: Generally weaker enemies, often armed with pistols or SMGs. Focus on headshots to conserve ammo.
- Wave 2: More numerous enemies, with a mix of pistols, SMGs, and sometimes shotguns. Be mindful of your health and armor.
- Wave 3: The toughest wave. Expect more enemies, better weapons (including AK-47s), and potentially more aggressive tactics. This is where your recruited gang members can really shine by drawing fire.
Strategy Tips:
- Stay Mobile: Don't stand still. Keep moving, use cover, and strafe to avoid incoming fire.
- Prioritize Threats: Take out enemies with powerful weapons first.
- Use Your Crew: Your recruited gang members will engage enemies. Use them as a distraction or to flank opponents. If they go down, don't worry, they'll respawn later.
- Health and Armor Pickups: Keep an eye out for health and armor pickups that may appear during the fight.
- Drive-by Tactics: If you're overwhelmed, jump into a car with your crew and perform drive-bys. This can be very effective, especially against groups.
After the War: Rewards and Consequences
Successfully winning a turf war will turn the contested area green, signifying it as Grove Street Families territory. You'll receive:
- Money: A cash reward for your efforts.
- Respect: Your Respect stat will increase, allowing you to recruit more gang members.
- Increased Income: Your gang will generate passive income from controlled territories, which you can collect from the safehouse wardrobe.
However, be aware that rival gangs may attempt to reclaim their lost territory. You'll receive a notification if a gang is attempting to attack your turf. You have a limited time to respond and defend it, otherwise, you'll lose control of that area. Defending turf is similar to initiating a war, but you'll be fighting on your home ground.
The Benefits of Dominance
Controlling a significant portion of Los Santos offers several advantages:
- Passive Income: A steady stream of cash without having to complete missions.
- Increased Respect: Essential for recruiting larger crews and unlocking certain story missions.
- Gang Presence: More Grove Street Family members will patrol your controlled areas, making them safer for CJ.
- Story Progression: Certain story missions require you to have a specific amount of territory under your control.
Aim to conquer all Ballas and Vagos territory in Los Santos before moving on to San Fierro and Las Venturas. This will give you a strong financial base and a powerful gang presence throughout the state.
