Wanted Level & Evasion
In Los Santos, attracting the attention of the LSPD (Los Santos Police Department) and other law enforcement agencies is an inevitable part of the Grand Theft Auto V experience. Understanding the Wanted Level system and mastering evasion techniques is crucial for survival and mission success. This section details how Wanted Levels work and provides actionable strategies to shake off the heat.
Understanding Wanted Levels
Your Wanted Level is indicated by stars in the top-right corner of your screen, ranging from 1 to 5 stars. The higher the star count, the more aggressive and numerous the pursuing forces become.
- 1 Star: LSPD patrol cars. Officers will attempt to arrest you or engage in light pursuit.
- 2 Stars: Increased LSPD presence, more aggressive pursuit, and roadblocks.
- 3 Stars: LSPD and FIB (Federal Investigation Bureau) units join the pursuit. Helicopters will be deployed, and spike strips may appear.
- 4 Stars: NOOSE (National Office of Security Enforcement) units, including armored vehicles, join the chase. Helicopters are more persistent, and ground forces are heavily armed.
- 5 Stars: All available law enforcement, including military-grade vehicles and heavily armed personnel, will be deployed. This is extremely difficult to escape.
General Evasion Strategies
The core principle of evasion is to break line-of-sight with all pursuing units and remain hidden until your Wanted Level timer depletes. The mini-map is your best friend during pursuits, showing the vision cones of police units as blue areas.
- Get Out of Sight: The most immediate step is to drive or run away from the immediate area of the crime. Once you're out of the blue police vision cone on the mini-map, the Wanted Level will begin to flash, indicating you're in the "evasion" phase.
- Change Vehicles: If you're in a highly recognizable vehicle, ditch it! Steal a new car quickly. This is especially effective at 1-2 stars.
- Go Off-Road: Many police vehicles struggle off-road. If you're near a mountainous area like Mount Chiliad or the Grand Senora Desert, take advantage of the terrain.
- Utilize Tunnels and Underpasses: Tunnels, like the one beneath the Los Santos International Airport, can be excellent for breaking line-of-sight. Drive through them at high speed.
- Hide in Garages/Parking Lots: Entering a multi-story parking garage or a private garage (like your character's safehouse garage) can sometimes instantly clear a low Wanted Level, especially if no police are directly in pursuit.
- Submerge in Water: If near a body of water, diving into a submarine or even a regular boat can often shake off land-based pursuers. For higher Wanted Levels, a submarine is more effective as helicopters will still track boats.
- Call Lester: For a fee, Lester Crest can remove your Wanted Level instantly. This is a reliable, albeit costly, option for desperate situations. Access this via your in-game phone's contacts.
Advanced Evasion Tactics by Wanted Level
1-2 Star Evasion
- Quick Vehicle Swap: As soon as you get a star, find a new car. Drive a block or two away, ditch your current vehicle, and steal another.
- Alleys and Side Streets: Duck into narrow alleys or residential side streets to quickly break line of sight.
- Drive Calmly (Sometimes): If you've just committed a minor infraction and police aren't actively pursuing, sometimes driving normally and blending in can work, but this is risky.
3-4 Star Evasion
- High-Performance Vehicles: A fast car like the Adder, Zentorno, or a fully upgraded sports car is essential. Speed is your primary defense.
- Helicopter Counter-Measures:
- Underpasses/Tunnels: Drive through long tunnels or underpasses to temporarily lose helicopter lock.
- Dense Urban Areas: Weave through skyscrapers and tall buildings in downtown Los Santos. The close proximity of structures can obstruct the helicopter's view.
- Weaponized Vehicles: If available, a vehicle with mounted weapons, like the Insurgent Pick-Up Custom, can shoot down police helicopters.
- Off-Road Escape (Sandy Shores/Blaine County): Head towards the desert or mountains. The uneven terrain and lack of clear roads make it difficult for police cars to keep up, though helicopters remain a threat.
- Sewage Tunnels: The extensive network of sewage tunnels throughout Los Santos can be an excellent hiding spot. Enter from accessible points, such as those near the Los Santos River.
5 Star Evasion
Escaping a 5-star Wanted Level is extremely challenging and often requires a combination of strategies and a bit of luck.
- Military Bases (Fort Zancudo): While entering Fort Zancudo will instantly grant you 4-5 stars, if you're already at 5 stars, the base's extensive layout and aircraft hangars can provide cover. Stealing a Lazer Jet or Rhino Tank from here can turn the tables, but be prepared for heavy resistance.
- Submarine/Aircraft: The most reliable method for 5-star evasion is to get into an aircraft (like a stolen jet or helicopter) and fly high and far, or to use a submarine to dive deep into the ocean.
- Lester's "Remove Wanted Level" Service: This is often the only guaranteed way to escape 5 stars without significant effort or risk.
- Strategic Hiding Spots: Look for very secluded areas that are difficult for ground units and helicopters to access, such as specific caves in Blaine County or very dense, multi-level parking structures.
Important Considerations
- Vehicle Damage: Keep an eye on your vehicle's condition. A smoking engine or flat tires will severely hinder your escape.
- Character Abilities: Franklin's special ability (slow-motion driving) is invaluable for navigating tight spaces and evading pursuers.
- Pay 'n' Spray: While effective for low Wanted Levels, Pay 'n' Spray shops are often surrounded by police at higher star counts, making them a risky option.
- Mission-Specific Evasion: Some missions have unique evasion mechanics or designated escape routes. Always follow mission objectives first.
Mastering these techniques will allow you to navigate the criminal underworld of Los Santos with greater confidence, turning what could be a game-ending pursuit into a thrilling escape.
