Health, Stamina, and Special Meters

Survival in Los Santos hinges on understanding and managing your characters' core attributes: Health, Stamina, and their unique Special Ability meters. These meters dictate your effectiveness in combat, your endurance during physical activities, and your capacity for extraordinary actions. Mastering their use is crucial for success in both casual exploration and high-stakes missions.

Health is represented by a red bar. When your health drops to zero, you will die and respawn at the nearest hospital, losing a portion of your cash. Health can be replenished by consuming snacks, using medkits (found in various locations or purchased), or by resting. It's vital to keep your health topped up, especially before engaging in combat or dangerous situations. Certain activities, like being shot or falling from great heights, will deplete your health rapidly.

Stamina is depicted by a blue bar and governs your character's ability to perform strenuous activities such as running, swimming, cycling, and parachuting. As you exert yourself, the Stamina bar will deplete. If it runs out, your character will become exhausted, slowing down sificantly and becoming vulnerable. Stamina regenerates over time when you're not performing strenuous actions. To permanently increase your Stamina, you must engage in activities that use it, such as running long distances or swimming.

Each of the three protagonists possesses a unique Special Ability, indicated by a yellow bar that fills up as you perform actions relevant to that character's strengths. Once full, activating the Special Ability provides a temporary, powerful advantage:

  • Michael: His special ability allows him to slow down time during combat, making it easier to aim and take down multiple enemies. This is invaluable for gunfights and intense firefights.
  • Franklin: Franklin's special ability enables him to slow down time while driving, allowing for precise maneuvering, sharp turns, and the avoidance of collisions at high speeds. This is a game-changer for races and high-speed chases.
  • Trevor: Trevor's special ability increases his damage output while simultaneously reducing the damage he takes. This makes him a formidable force in direct combat, perfect for when things get particularly brutal.

To increase a character's Special Ability meter capacity and recharge rate, you must utilize their respective abilities frequently. For instance, Michael should engage in shootouts, Franklin should drive fast and skillfully, and Trevor should get into brawls and shootouts.
