Mini-Games & Diversions
Beyond the main story and side missions, Los Santos and Blaine County offer a plethora of mini-games and diversions that can enrich your gameplay, boost character stats, and even earn you some extra cash. Mastering these activities is key to achieving 100% completion and truly experiencing everything Grand Theft Auto V has to offer.
Sports & Athletics
Engaging in sports is an excellent way to improve your character's Stamina, Strength, and even Flying skill. Each activity offers unique challenges and rewards.
Golf
- Location: Los Santos Golf Club, Rockford Hills.
- Objective: Complete a full 9-hole or 18-hole round, aiming for the lowest score possible.
- Strategy:
- Club Selection: Pay close attention to the distance to the hole and wind conditions. Use longer clubs (Driver, Wood) for distance and shorter clubs (Iron, Wedge, Putter) for accuracy and approach shots.
- Power & Accuracy: The swing meter requires precise timing. Aim for the center of the power bar for maximum distance and the center of the accuracy bar for a straight shot. Overpowering a shot can lead to hooks or slices.
- Reading the Green: Before putting, observe the grid lines on the green to understand the slope. Adjust your aim and power accordingly to compensate for inclines and declines.
- Rewards: Completing a round contributes to 100% completion. Winning bets against NPCs can earn you significant cash.
Tennis
- Locations: Various courts across Los Santos, including Michael's house in Rockford Hills and public courts in Del Perro.
- Objective: Win sets against AI opponents.
- Strategy:
- Serve: Aim for the corners of the service box and use varied power to keep your opponent guessing.
- Shot Types: Utilize different shot types (Topspin, Slice, Lob, Drop Shot) to control the rally. Topspin offers power, Slice offers control and backspin, Lobs can get over opponents, and Drop Shots are great for short-range surprises.
- Court Positioning: Try to stay near the baseline but be prepared to move forward for volleys or back for lobs.
- Stamina: Longer rallies will drain your character's Stamina. Ensure your character has a decent Stamina stat for extended matches.
- Rewards: Winning matches improves Stamina and contributes to 100% completion.
Darts
- Locations: Yellow Jack Inn (Route 68, Blaine County) and The Baytree Canyon Bar (Great Chaparral).
- Objective: Be the first to reduce your score from 301 to exactly zero, ending on a double.
- Strategy:
- Aiming: Use the left stick to move the reticle and the right stick for fine adjustments. Practice makes perfect.
- Scoring: Aim for the triple 20 (T20) for the highest score per dart (60 points).
- Finishing: To win, you must hit a double segment that brings your score to exactly zero. For example, if you have 40 points left, aim for Double 20 (D20). If you have 32, aim for Double 16 (D16).
- Busting: If your score goes below zero or you hit a non-double segment when you need a double to finish, your turn is "busted," and your score reverts to what it was at the start of that turn.
- Rewards: Winning a game of darts contributes to 100% completion.
Triathlon
- Locations: Various points around the map, marked with a triathlon icon.
- Objective: Complete a multi-stage race involving swimming, cycling, and running.
- Strategy:
- Stamina is Key: This is the ultimate test of your character's Stamina. Maxing out this stat before attempting triathlons is highly recommended.
- Pacing: Don't sprint constantly. Manage your Stamina bar carefully, especially during the running and cycling segments.
- Cycling: Hold down the sprint button, but release it periodically to allow your Stamina to regenerate slightly.
- Swimming: Similar to cycling, manage your sprint. Dive underwater (L1/LB) for a brief speed boost, but be mindful of your oxygen.
- Rewards: Completing all triathlons is essential for 100% completion and significantly boosts your character's Stamina.
Shooting Range
- Locations: Ammu-Nation stores across Los Santos and Blaine County.
- Objective: Complete various challenges with different weapon types, aiming for high scores and medals.
- Strategy:
- Weapon Proficiency: Each challenge focuses on a specific weapon category (Pistols, SMGs, Assault Rifles, Shotguns, Heavy Weapons). Practice with your preferred weapons.
- Headshots: Aim for headshots to maximize your score. They offer significant bonus points.
- Accuracy & Speed: Balance accuracy with speed. Quickly dispatching targets while maintaining precision is crucial for gold medals.
- Cover: Utilize cover when available to reload or avoid incoming fire in certain challenges.
- Rewards: Earning gold medals in all shooting range challenges is required for 100% completion. It also improves your character's Shooting skill, leading to better accuracy, reduced recoil, and increased ammo capacity.
Flight School
- Location: Los Santos International Airport.
- Objective: Master various aerial maneuvers and challenges using different aircraft.
- Strategy:
- Practice Controls: Flying in GTA V can be challenging initially. Spend time in free roam practicing basic take-offs, landings, and turns before attempting the school.
- Listen to Instructions: The instructor provides crucial tips for each lesson. Pay close attention to his advice.
- Precision: Many challenges require precise flying through checkpoints or specific maneuvers. Don't rush; focus on smooth, controlled movements.
- Rewards: Completing all Flight School lessons with at least a bronze medal is necessary for 100% completion. It significantly boosts your character's Flying skill, making all aircraft easier to control.
Other Diversions
Stock Market (BAWSAQ & LCN)
- Location: Accessible via your in-game phone's internet browser.
- Objective: Buy low, sell high, and manipulate the market to earn massive profits.
- Strategy:
- Assassination Missions (Lester): The most reliable way to manipulate the stock market. Before each of Lester's assassination missions, invest heavily in the rival company of your target. After completing the mission, the target company's stock will plummet, and its rival's stock will soar. Sell for huge profits.
- Random Events: Pay attention to news reports and random events in the game. Certain events can affect stock prices.
- Research: While less reliable than Lester's missions, you can try to research companies and their rivals. For example, if you destroy a lot of vehicles from a specific car manufacturer, their stock might drop.
- Patience: Sometimes, you need to wait for the market to move in your favor. Don't panic sell unless absolutely necessary.
Fairground Rides
- Locations: Del Perro Pier (Ferris Whale, Leviathan).
- Objective: Enjoy the rides.
- Rewards: Purely for entertainment and a bit of immersion. No direct gameplay rewards or 100% completion requirements, but a fun way to pass time.
Strip Club
- Location: Vanilla Unicorn, Strawberry.
- Objective: Get private dances, interact with the dancers.
- Strategy: As Franklin, you can eventually become the owner of the Vanilla Unicorn, providing a steady stream of income. Regular visits and private dances can also improve your character's Stamina and even unlock special interactions with certain dancers.
- Rewards: Owning the club generates passive income.
Cinema
- Locations: Doppler Cinema (Downtown Vinewood), Ten Cent Theater (Textile City), Tivoli Cinema (Morningwood).
- Objective: Watch short films.
- Rewards: Primarily for immersion and a break from the action. No direct gameplay rewards.
Exploring these mini-games and diversions not only adds depth to your Grand Theft Auto V experience but also provides valuable opportunities to improve your characters and achieve that coveted 100% completion status. Don't just stick to the main story; Los Santos has so much more to offer!
