Security Van Robberies

Security Van Robberies are dynamic, unscripted random events that offer a quick cash injection early in your playthrough. These events appear as blue dot icons on your mini-map, often accompanied by a distinctive siren sound. They are most common in the more affluent areas of Los Santos, such as Rockford Hills and Richman, but can occur anywhere. There are 10 unique Security Van events in total, each with slightly different spawn conditions and locations. Successfully robbing a van typically yields between $3,000 and $8,000, along with 1,000 RP.

Identifying and Initiating a Robbery

  • Spotting the Van: Keep an eye out for a blue dot on your mini-map. This indicates a random event. If it's a Security Van, you'll see a white armored truck icon.
  • Approaching the Scene: As you get closer, you'll often see two armored guards either loading or unloading cash cases from the back of the van. Sometimes, they'll just be standing guard.
  • Triggering the Event: Simply driving near the van or engaging the guards will initiate the robbery.

Robbery Strategies

There are several effective ways to crack open a Security Van and grab the loot. Your choice of strategy will depend on your current weapon loadout, vehicle, and desired level of confrontation.

Method 1: The Direct Approach (Recommended for Early Game)

This method is straightforward and can be executed with minimal preparation.

  1. Eliminate the Guards: As you approach, immediately target and eliminate the two armored guards. A few shots to the head with a Pistol or Micro SMG will suffice. Be aware that they are armed and will return fire.
  2. Open the Back Doors: Once the guards are down, focus your fire on the rear doors of the Security Van. Use any automatic weapon (Assault Rifle, Carbine Rifle, SMG) or even a Shotgun. After a sustained burst of fire, the doors will burst open, revealing two briefcases of cash.
  3. Grab the Cash: Drive or run over the briefcases to collect the money.
  4. Escape the Scene: A 2-star wanted level will be immediately triggered. Quickly get into a fast vehicle and escape the police pursuit. use alleys, off-road sections, and Pay 'n' Spray locations to lose the heat.
Method 2: The Sticky Bomb/Grenade Approach (Quick & Explosive)

This is the fastest way to open the van, but requires explosives.

  1. Deploy Explosives: Drive up behind the Security Van. Equip a Sticky Bomb or Grenade.
  2. Attach/Throw: Attach a Sticky Bomb to the rear doors or throw a Grenade directly at them.
  3. Detonate: Detonate the Sticky Bomb (or wait for the Grenade to explode). The doors will blow open instantly.
  4. Collect and Flee: Grab the cash briefcases and immediately escape the 2-star wanted level. This method is particularly effective if you want to avoid a direct shootout with the guards.
Method 3: The Ramming Technique (Vehicle Dependent)

This method is less reliable but can be fun if you have a sturdy vehicle.

  1. Acquire a Heavy Vehicle: A large SUV, truck, or even a bus works best.
  2. Ram the Doors: Repeatedly ram the rear doors of the Security Van with your heavy vehicle. It may take several forceful impacts.
  3. Collect and Escape: Once the doors buckle and open, collect the cash and deal with the resulting 2-star wanted level. This method can damage your vehicle significantly.

Post-Robbery Tips

  • Wanted Level: Expect a 2-star wanted level immediately after collecting the cash. Be prepared to escape.
  • Pay 'n' Spray: The quickest way to lose a 2-star wanted level is often to drive into a Pay 'n' Spray.
  • Off-Road Escape: If you're in a rural area, using off-road terrain can be an effective way to evade police.
  • Vehicle Choice: A fast car is ideal for escaping, but a durable vehicle can be useful for the ramming technique.
  • Ammunition: Ensure you have sufficient ammunition for your chosen weapons, especially if opting for the direct approach.

Notable Security Van Locations (Examples)

  • Rockford Hills: Often seen near the high-end stores on Portola Drive.
  • Richman: Can spawn near the golf course or the university campus.
  • Downtown Vinewood: Sometimes found near the Oriental Theater or the Eclipse Towers.
