Fast Travel & Navigation
Navigating the sprawling, vibrant, and sometimes dangerous landscape of Leonida and its surrounding counties is a core part of the Grand Theft Auto VI experience. While the joy of cruising down Vice City's neon-lit streets or tearing through the swamps of the Florida Keys is undeniable, sometimes you just need to get somewhere fast. This section details all available fast travel methods and essential navigation tips to help you master the map.
Fast Travel Options
Unlike previous Grand Theft Auto titles, GTA VI introduces several enhanced and new fast travel mechanics, offering both convenience and immersion.
- Taxi & Ride-Share Services:
- How to Use: Open your phone (Up D-Pad/Tab), select the "ViceCab" or "RideNow" app. Choose your destination from the map, and a driver will pick you up.
- Cost: Varies based on distance and time of day. Expect higher fares during peak hours or for longer journeys across the state.
- Skipping the Ride: Once in the vehicle, you'll have the option to "Skip Trip" (Hold X/Square/F). This instantly transports you to your destination, but you'll miss out on potential random encounters or character dialogue during the ride.
- Unlocking: ViceCab is available from the start of the game. RideNow, a premium service offering luxury vehicles and faster response times, unlocks after completing the mission "High Roller Hustle" for Lucia.
- Public Transportation (VCS Transit):
- Metro System: Vice City boasts an extensive elevated metro system. Look for the distinctive "VCS Transit" logos on your map. Enter any station, purchase a ticket from a kiosk (or use your phone's transit app), and select your destination.
- Bus Routes: Buses operate on fixed routes throughout Vice City and some suburban areas. You can hail a bus from designated bus stops or simply wait for one to arrive. Pay the fare upon boarding.
- Benefits: Cheaper than ride-share services, and offers a unique perspective of the city. Ideal for players on a budget or those who enjoy a more relaxed journey.
- Limitations: Fixed routes and schedules mean less direct travel to specific points of interest compared to taxis.
- Property Fast Travel:
- How to Use: Once you own a safehouse or business, you can fast travel directly to it from the pause menu map. Hover over your owned property icon (usually a green house or dollar sign) and press the designated fast travel button (usually Y/Triangle/E).
- Requirements: You must have purchased the property first. This is an excellent way to quickly return to a base of operations or switch characters if they are at different properties.
- Unlocking: The first safehouse in Vice City, the "Ocean Beach Apartment", becomes available early in the story. Subsequent properties unlock as you progress and accumulate wealth.
- Aircraft & Boats (Owned):
- Personal Hangar/Dock Fast Travel: Similar to property fast travel, if you own a hangar or boat dock with a stored vehicle, you can fast travel directly to that location. This is particularly useful for quickly deploying air or sea vehicles for missions.
- Strategic Advantage: Owning a Seashark or a capable helicopter like the "Maverick" can drastically cut down travel time across water bodies or over dense urban areas.
Navigation Essentials
Even with fast travel, understanding the map and using your navigation tools effectively is crucial for success in Leonida.
- The Minimap: Located in the bottom-left corner of your screen, the minimap displays your immediate surroundings, mission objectives (yellow markers), points of interest (various icons), and enemy locations (red dots).
- Setting Waypoints:
- Open the full map (Pause Menu).
- Scroll and zoom to your desired destination.
- Place a waypoint marker (A/X/Left Click).
- A GPS route will appear on your minimap and in the game world, guiding you with a clear line.
- GPS Voice Navigation: Pay attention to the in-game GPS voice, which provides timely turn-by-turn directions. This is especially helpful when driving at high speeds or navigating complex intersections.
- Points of Interest (POIs):
- Ammu-Nation: Weapon icon. Essential for restocking ammo and purchasing new firearms.
- Clothing Stores: T-shirt icon. Customize your character's appearance.
- Pay 'n' Spray: Spray can icon. Repair your vehicle and lose wanted levels.
- Hospitals: Cross icon. Respawns you after being wasted.
- Gas Stations: Fuel pump icon. While not strictly necessary for gameplay, some missions may require refueling.
- Avoiding Wanted Levels: When navigating, be mindful of your surroundings. Driving recklessly, hitting pedestrians, or engaging in criminal activity will attract police attention, potentially leading to a chase and disrupting your travel plans. Use back alleys and less populated roads to evade the authorities if necessary.
