Food & Water Management

Survival in the Amazon hinges on your ability to consistently manage your hunger and thirst. Neglecting these vital stats will quickly lead to debuffs, hallucinations, and ultimately, a swift demise. This section will guide you through sustainable methods for acquiring and purifying food and water.

Water Acquisition & Purification

Clean water is paramount. Drinking untreated water is a surefire way to contract parasites, leading to constant vomiting and rapid dehydration. Always purify your water!

  • Rain Collectors: The simplest and safest method. Construct a Small Rain Collector (3x Long Stick, 3x Rope, 1x Banana Leaf) or a Large Rain Collector (4x Long Stick, 4x Rope, 1x Banana Leaf, 1x Large Stone). Place them in an open area to catch rainfall. The water collected is immediately potable.
  • Boiling Water: For immediate needs, collect dirty water from rivers or ponds using a Coconut Bidon (1x Coconut Shell, 1x Rope) or a Turtle Shell. Build a Campfire (Small Stick, Small Stick, Small Stick, Small Stick, Tinder) and place a Pot (found in abandoned camps or crafted from a Large Stone and a Pickaxe) filled with dirty water on it. Once boiled, the water is safe to drink.
  • Water Filter: A more advanced solution for sustained water purification. Craft a Water Filter (1x Rope, 1x Large Stone, 1x Charcoal, 1x Ash, 1x Fabric). This allows you to filter dirty water directly into clean water.
  • Coconuts: Young Coconuts provide immediate hydration and a small amount of energy. Crack them open using a sharp object or by dropping them on a hard surface.

Food Sources & Preparation

A balanced diet is crucial to maintain your macronutrient levels (Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats). Ignoring any of these will lead to negative status effects.

Plant-Based Foods (Carbohydrates & Fats)

  • Fruits:
    • Bananas: Common, provides Carbs.
    • Coconuts: Provides Fats and Hydration. Crack open a Young Coconut for water, then further process the Coconut Shell to get Coconut Meat.
    • Brazil Nuts: Found on the ground near large trees. Excellent source of Fats.
    • Monstera Deliciosa: A large, green fruit found on vines. Provides Carbs.
  • Mushrooms: Be extremely cautious! Only consume mushrooms you have positively identified as safe.
    • Orange Mushroom: Safe, provides Carbs.
    • Blue Mushroom: Safe, provides Carbs.
    • Glow Shroom: Safe, provides Carbs and can be used as a light source.
    • Poisonous Mushrooms: Avoid at all costs. Ingesting them will cause poisoning and vomiting.
  • Honey: Found in Beehives (often high in trees). Use a Torch or Smoker to pacify the bees before collecting. Provides a good amount of Carbs.

Animal-Based Foods (Proteins & Fats)

Hunting and trapping are essential for protein and fat intake. Always cook raw meat to avoid food poisoning.

  • Small Game:
    • Lizards: Catchable by hand or with a Small Trap. Cook on a Campfire.
    • Frogs: Similar to lizards, catchable by hand. Cook on a Campfire.
    • Birds: Can be hunted with a Bow and Arrow or caught in Bird Traps. Cook on a Campfire.
    • Fish: Caught using a Fishing Rod (Long Stick, Rope, Feather) or Fish Traps in rivers. Cook on a Campfire.
  • Medium Game:
    • Capybara: Found near water sources. Hunt with a Spear or Bow and Arrow. Provides a significant amount of meat.
    • Pecarry: Often found in groups. Can be aggressive. Hunt with a Spear or Bow and Arrow.
  • Large Game:
    • Tapir: Large, docile creatures. Provide a substantial amount of meat and fat. Best hunted with a Bow and Arrow from a safe distance.
    • Jaguar/Puma: Dangerous predators. Only hunt if well-equipped and prepared for a fight. Yields a large amount of meat and valuable Jaguar/Puma Skin.
  • Insects: While not ideal, some insects can provide a quick protein boost in a pinch.
    • Grubs: Found in rotten logs. Cook before eating.
    • Worms: Found by digging in soft ground. Cook before eating.

Cooking Methods

  • Campfire: The most basic cooking method. Place raw meat directly onto the fire. Be careful not to burn it!
  • Stone Ring Fire: A more efficient campfire that allows you to cook multiple items simultaneously. Requires 1x Campfire and 4x Small Stone.
  • Grill: Built over a Campfire or Stone Ring Fire (3x Long Stick, 3x Small Stick). Allows for cooking multiple pieces of meat without burning as easily.
  • Smoker: A more advanced cooking station (4x Long Stick, 4x Short Stick, 4x Rope, 1x Banana Leaf). Smoked meat lasts significantly longer, reducing spoilage.

Food Preservation

Spoilage is a constant threat. Prioritize cooking and preserving food to avoid waste and potential illness.

  • Smoking: As mentioned, the Smoker is your best friend for long-term food storage. Smoked meat has a much longer shelf life.
  • Drying Rack: Similar to smoking, a Drying Rack (4x Long Stick, 4x Short Stick, 4x Rope) can be used to dry meat, extending its freshness.
  • Food Storage Box: While it doesn't prevent spoilage, a Food Storage Box (4x Long Stick, 4x Short Stick, 4x Rope, 1x Banana Leaf) organizes your food and keeps it safe from insects and small animals.

Nutrient Management

Keep an eye on your macronutrient bars (Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats) in your watch. Aim to keep all three above 50% to avoid negative status effects. A balanced diet of both plant and animal foods is key.
