Status Effects & Illnesses
The Amazon rainforest is a beautiful, yet deadly, environment. Beyond the obvious threats of predators and starvation, your survival in Green Hell hinges on managing a myriad of status effects and illnesses. Ignoring these ailments can quickly lead to your demise. This guide will walk you through identifying, preventing, and treating every affliction you might encounter.
Understanding Your Body
Your smartwatch is your most crucial tool for monitoring your health. Regularly check the "Body" tab to see active status effects, their severity, and your four core nutritional values: Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, and Hydration. Maintaining a balanced diet is key to preventing many illnesses.
Common Status Effects & Treatments
1. Bleeding
- Cause: Attacks from predators (jaguars, pumas, snakes), falls, sharp objects (e.g., cutting yourself on a sharp rock or bone).
- Symptoms: Blood loss, visible wound, health drain.
- Treatment:
- Clean the Wound: Apply a Bandage (crafted from Plantain Lily leaves) or a Leaf Bandage (any leaf). This stops the bleeding.
- Disinfect (Optional but Recommended): For deeper wounds, disinfect with Tobacco leaves or a Honey Dressing (Honey + Leaf Bandage) to prevent infection.
- Prevention: Be cautious when exploring, avoid direct combat with dangerous animals if possible, and wear armor (e.g., Bone Armor, Armadillo Armor) to reduce damage.
2. Poisoning
- Cause: Bites from venomous snakes (e.g., Bushmaster, Coral Snake), scorpion stings, consuming poisonous plants or fungi.
- Symptoms: Blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, rapid health and stamina drain.
- Treatment:
- Identify Source: If from an animal, try to remember what bit you.
- Apply Dressing: Use a Tobacco Dressing (Tobacco + Leaf Bandage) or a Lily Dressing (Lily + Leaf Bandage) to draw out the poison.
- Antidote (Severe Cases): For severe poisoning, craft an Antidote at a Crafting Table using Poison Dart Frog venom (carefully harvested) and Honey.
- Prevention: Always inspect plants and fungi before consumption. Be wary of tall grass and dark areas where venomous creatures might hide. Wear Leg Wraps or Armadillo Armor for some protection.
3. Infection
- Cause: Uncleaned or untreated wounds, insect bites (e.g., Ants, Leeches), dirty water consumption.
- Symptoms: Pus-filled wounds, fever, health drain, reduced stamina.
- Treatment:
- Clean and Disinfect: Apply a Maggot Dressing (Maggots + Leaf Bandage) to clean the wound, followed by a Honey Dressing or Tobacco Dressing to disinfect.
- Antibiotics (Advanced): In later stages, you may need to craft Herbal Antibiotics using specific medicinal plants like Goliath Bird-eater mushroom or Quassia Amara bark.
- Prevention: Always clean and disinfect wounds promptly. Avoid swimming in stagnant water. Boil all water before drinking.
4. Parasites
- Cause: Consuming raw or undercooked meat, drinking unboiled water, eating contaminated food.
- Symptoms: Rapid hydration and nutritional drain, constant hunger/thirst.
- Treatment:
- Herbal Remedy: Eat Psychotria leaves or craft a Psychotria Tea (Psychotria + Water in a Coconut Bidon or Bamboo Flask).
- Charcoal: Consuming Charcoal (from burnt wood) can also help.
- Prevention: Always cook meat thoroughly over a Campfire. Boil all water before drinking. Store food in Food Dryers or Storage Boxes to prevent spoilage.
5. Rash
- Cause: Contact with poisonous plants (e.g., Poison Ivy), prolonged exposure to dirty water, insect bites.
- Symptoms: Itching, visible red patches on skin, minor health drain.
- Treatment:
- Cleanse: Wash with Soap (crafted from Ash and Animal Fat) or apply a Honey Dressing.
- Herbal Relief: Use Aloe Vera leaves directly on the rash.
- Prevention: Be mindful of your surroundings, especially when traversing dense foliage. Avoid swimming in murky water.
6. Worms
- Cause: Eating rotten food, consuming raw or undercooked meat, drinking dirty water.
- Symptoms: Visible worms crawling under the skin, constant itching, health drain, reduced sanity.
- Treatment:
- Extraction: Use a Bone Needle or Fish Bone to carefully extract the worms. This will cause some pain and bleeding, so be prepared to bandage afterwards.
- Disinfect: Apply a Honey Dressing or Tobacco Dressing to the wound.
- Prevention: Strict adherence to food safety. Cook all meat, boil all water, and avoid rotten food.
7. Food Poisoning
- Cause: Consuming spoiled food, raw or undercooked meat, or certain poisonous plants/fungi.
- Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, rapid hydration and nutritional drain, stomach cramps.
- Treatment:
- Rest: Allow your body to recover.
- Hydrate: Drink plenty of Boiled Water.
- Charcoal: Consuming Charcoal can help absorb toxins.
- Prevention: Always check food spoilage before eating. Cook all meat. Avoid unknown plants and fungi.
Environmental & Mental Status Effects
1. Insomnia
- Cause: Prolonged periods without sleep, high stress levels (low sanity).
- Symptoms: Blurred vision, reduced stamina regeneration, difficulty concentrating.
- Treatment:
- Sleep: Find a safe place to sleep for at least a few hours. A Shelter or Sleeping Bag is ideal.
- Reduce Stress: Engage in calming activities like crafting, sitting by a fire, or eating cooked food.
- Prevention: Maintain a regular sleep schedule. Keep your sanity high.
2. Sanity Loss
- Cause: Eating raw meat, consuming insects, witnessing disturbing events (e.g., dead bodies), prolonged darkness, isolation, encountering hostile tribesmen.
- Symptoms: Hallucinations (visual and auditory), paranoia, reduced stamina, increased vulnerability to fear.
- Treatment:
- Eat Cooked Food: Cooked meat and mushrooms restore sanity.
- Sleep: Sleeping in a safe, comfortable place helps.
- Crafting/Building: Engaging in productive activities can improve sanity.
- Campfire: Sitting by a Campfire at night provides comfort.
- Prevention: Prioritize cooked food. Avoid eating insects unless absolutely necessary. Build a base and stay near it.
3. Exhaustion
- Cause: Prolonged physical activity, lack of sleep, low energy.
- Symptoms: Reduced movement speed, inability to sprint, rapid stamina drain.
- Treatment:
- Rest: Sit down or sleep to regain stamina.
- Eat Carbs: Consume carbohydrate-rich foods like Cassava, Bananas, or Honey to replenish energy.
- Prevention: Manage your stamina effectively. Don't overexert yourself. Ensure a steady intake of carbohydrates.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Your smartwatch tracks four key nutritional values. If any drop too low, you'll suffer negative consequences.
1. Carbohydrate Deficiency
- Symptoms: Reduced stamina regeneration, fatigue, weakness.
- Treatment: Consume foods rich in carbohydrates such as Cassava, Bananas, Honey, Brazil Nuts, or Coconut Meat.
2. Fat Deficiency
- Symptoms: Reduced maximum health, increased vulnerability to cold.
- Treatment: Eat fatty foods like Animal Fat (from hunted animals), Brazil Nuts, or Coconut Meat.
3. Protein Deficiency
- Symptoms: Muscle weakness, reduced carrying capacity, slower healing.
- Treatment: Consume protein-rich foods such as cooked Meat (from Capybaras, Peccaries, Tapirs), Fish, or Eggs.
4. Hydration Deficiency
- Symptoms: Blurred vision, rapid stamina drain, health loss.
- Treatment: Drink Boiled Water, Coconut Water, or Rainwater collected in a Water Collector.
