Note Types Explained
Mastering Guitar Hero II (Arcade) requires a deep understanding of the various note types that scroll down your fretboard. Each note demands a specific action, and recognizing them quickly is key to racking up high scores and maintaining your rock meter. This section will break down every note type you'll encounter, providing actionable strategies for each.
Standard Notes
These are your bread and butter, the foundational elements of every song. They appear as colored circles corresponding to the five fret buttons on your guitar controller.
- Appearance: Solid colored circles (Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange) scrolling down the note highway.
- Action: When a standard note reaches the bottom "strike zone," you must simultaneously hold down the corresponding fret button and strum the strum bar.
- Strategy:
- Timing is Everything: Aim to strum precisely as the note aligns with the strike zone. Too early or too late will result in a missed note.
- Fret Hand Positioning: Keep your fret hand relaxed and positioned over the buttons. For beginners, try to use one finger per fret button. As you advance, you'll develop more fluid finger movements.
- Strumming Technique: A single, clean strum is usually sufficient. Avoid "over-strumming" (strumming multiple times for a single note), as this can throw off your rhythm for subsequent notes.
Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs (HO/PO)
These special notes allow you to play a sequence of notes without strumming each individual one, creating a more fluid and guitar-like experience. They are indicated by a glowing outline around the note.
- Appearance: Standard colored circles with a bright, glowing aura.
- Action:
- Hammer-On: After strumming an initial note, you can play subsequent higher-pitched HO/PO notes in a sequence by simply pressing down the corresponding fret button without strumming.
- Pull-Off: After strumming an initial note, you can play subsequent lower-pitched HO/PO notes in a sequence by releasing a higher fret button while a lower fret button is already held down, again without strumming.
- Strategy:
- Initial Strum is Crucial: The first note in an HO/PO sequence *must* be strummed. If you miss the initial strum, the entire sequence will be broken.
- Maintain Fret Pressure: For pull-offs, ensure you're holding down the lower fret button firmly before releasing the higher one.
- Practice Sequences: HO/PO sections often come in rapid succession. Practice songs with frequent HO/POs to build finger dexterity and muscle memory. "Hangar 18" and "YYZ" are excellent tracks for practicing complex HO/PO patterns.
- Visual Cues: The glowing effect is your primary indicator. Train your eyes to spot these notes quickly so you can adjust your strumming hand accordingly.
Sustained Notes
These notes require you to hold a fret button down for an extended period, mimicking the sustained sound of a real guitar note.
- Appearance: A standard colored circle with a long, glowing tail extending downwards.
- Action: Strum the note as it hits the strike zone, then continue to hold down the corresponding fret button for the entire duration of the glowing tail. Release the fret button only after the tail passes the strike zone.
- Strategy:
- Hold Firmly: Ensure consistent pressure on the fret button throughout the sustain. Releasing too early will cut the note short and reduce your score.
- Vibrato (Optional but Recommended): While holding a sustained note, you can gently wiggle the whammy bar to earn extra points and activate Star Power more quickly if the sustained note is part of a Star Power phrase. This is especially effective on longer sustains.
- Multi-Sustains: Sometimes you'll encounter multiple sustained notes simultaneously. You'll need to hold down all corresponding fret buttons for their respective durations.
Star Power Phrases
These are not a note type themselves, but rather a sequence of notes that, when successfully played, contribute to your Star Power meter.
- Appearance: A series of notes (standard, HO/PO, or sustained) that glow with a distinct star-like shimmer.
- Action: Successfully hit every note within the glowing Star Power phrase.
- Strategy:
- Prioritize Accuracy: Missing even one note in a Star Power phrase means you won't earn the Star Power for that section. Focus on hitting these notes perfectly.
- Whammy Bar Bonus: During sustained notes within a Star Power phrase, using the whammy bar will fill your Star Power meter faster.
- Strategic Activation: Once your Star Power meter is at least half full, you can activate it by tilting your guitar controller vertically or pressing the "Select" button. Save Star Power for difficult sections or to maximize your score multiplier during high-scoring opportunities.
