Individual Achievement Guides

Barnacle Bowling

Objective: Kill a Barnacle with a thrown object.

This achievement is a fantastic way to familiarize yourself with the Gravity Gun's potential for environmental kills. Barnacles are those stationary, tentacled creatures that hang from ceilings, extending a long, sticky tongue to grab anything that passes underneath. They are found throughout the game, particularly in dark, damp areas like the canals and Ravenholm.

  • Location: The earliest and one of the easiest places to achieve this is during the chapter "Route Kanal." As you navigate the canals, you'll encounter numerous Barnacles.
  • Strategy:
    1. Equip your Gravity Gun.
    2. Look for a Barnacle hanging from the ceiling.
    3. Scan the immediate area for loose objects. Common items include wooden crates, metal barrels, cinder blocks, or even severed Combine limbs.
    4. Use the Gravity Gun (primary fire) to pick up a suitable object.
    5. Aim carefully at the Barnacle's mouth/tongue.
    6. Release the object (primary fire again) with enough force to send it flying into the Barnacle. If successful, the Barnacle will recoil and die.
  • Tips: Don't be afraid to experiment with different objects. Heavier objects tend to be more effective, but even smaller items can work if thrown with precision. If you miss, simply pick up another object and try again. There are plenty of Barnacles and throwable items in the early chapters.

Zero-Point Energy

Objective: Get the Gravity Gun.

This achievement is unmissable and serves as a key narrative progression point, but it's worth noting for completionists. The Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator, affectionately known as the Gravity Gun, is one of the most iconic weapons in gaming history, and you'll acquire it naturally as part of the story.

  • Location: You will receive the Gravity Gun during the chapter "Black Mesa East."
  • Walkthrough:
    1. Progress through the chapter "Black Mesa East" until you meet Alyx Vance and Dr. Eli Vance.
    2. After a brief conversation and some exposition, Alyx will lead you to a lab area.
    3. She will then present you with the Gravity Gun, explaining its functions and demonstrating its capabilities.
    4. Simply pick up the weapon when prompted, and the achievement will unlock immediately.
  • Significance: While an easy achievement, acquiring the Gravity Gun fundamentally changes how you interact with the environment and combat in Half-Life 2. It opens up new tactical possibilities and is essential for many puzzles and future achievements.

Two Points

Objective: Pick up the can.

This is arguably the very first achievement you can earn in Half-Life 2, and it's a subtle nod to the game's opening moments and the oppressive atmosphere of City 17. It's a simple task, but one that sets the tone for your journey.

  • Location: This achievement is earned right at the beginning of the game, during the chapter "Point Insertion."
  • Walkthrough:
    1. After the initial G-Man monologue and your arrival at City 17's train station, you'll be directed by a Combine Civil Protection officer.
    2. As you proceed, you'll notice a discarded soda can on the ground.
    3. A Civil Protection officer will kick the can towards you and then order you to "Pick up that can."
    4. Simply look at the can and press your 'Use' key (default 'E') to pick it up.
    5. The achievement will unlock as soon as the can is in your possession.
  • Alternative: While the officer explicitly tells you to pick it up, you can also earn this achievement by picking up any other loose can you might find early in the game, though the scripted moment is the most direct path.

Zombie Chopper

Objective: Play through Ravenholm using only the Gravity Gun and the Crowbar.

This is a challenging and iconic achievement that truly tests your resourcefulness and mastery of Half-Life 2's core mechanics. Ravenholm is a notoriously dark and dangerous chapter, teeming with various types of Zombies and Headcrabs. Relying solely on your Crowbar and Gravity Gun forces you to think creatively about combat and environmental hazards.

  • Chapter: "We Don't Go To Ravenholm..."
  • Strategy:
    1. Weapon Restriction: Absolutely DO NOT fire any conventional firearms (pistols, SMGs, shotguns, etc.) at any point during this chapter. Even a single shot will void the achievement.
    2. Crowbar Combat: The Crowbar is your primary melee weapon. Use it against individual Headcrabs and Zombies. Aim for the head for critical damage.
    3. Gravity Gun Mastery: This is your most powerful tool.
      • Propelled Objects: Use the Gravity Gun to launch sharp objects (saw blades, rebar, broken furniture) at enemies. Saw blades are particularly effective, often capable of dismembering or instantly killing Zombies.
      • Environmental Hazards: Ravenholm is full of traps. Use the Gravity Gun to activate tripmines, push explosive barrels into groups of enemies, or drop heavy objects from above.
      • "Fast Zombies" and "Poison Zombies": These variants are more agile and dangerous. For Fast Zombies, try to pin them against walls with objects or use explosive barrels. For Poison Zombies, aim to knock off their Headcrab carriers or use explosive objects from a distance.
    4. Father Grigori's Help: Father Grigori will assist you throughout the chapter. While his shotgun kills don't count against you, try to lure enemies into his line of fire or use his traps to your advantage.
    5. Conserve Health: Without firearms, you'll be taking more risks. Prioritize finding health packs and using the limited health stations.
    6. Save Often: Make frequent saves, especially before challenging encounters. If you accidentally fire a weapon, you can reload a previous save.
  • Key Locations/Tips:
    • Saw Blades: The mining areas are excellent for finding saw blades. Carry one or two with you using the Gravity Gun for easy disposal of enemies.
    • Explosive Barrels: These are your best friends against groups. Look for red barrels and strategically place or launch them.
    • Car Traps: Several areas have cars rigged to explode. Lure Zombies near them and detonate with a thrown object or by shooting the explosive barrel underneath (using the Gravity Gun to throw an object at it, not a bullet!).
    • Minefield: The minefield section requires careful navigation. Use the Gravity Gun to disarm mines or throw them at enemies.
  • Verification: The achievement unlocks upon completing the chapter, provided you haven't fired any non-Gravity Gun/Crowbar weapons.
