Resource Management & Conservation — Half-Life 2 Guide

In Half-Life 2, master resource management for ammunition and health packs. Every bullet and medkit is critical for survival against Combine.

In the oppressive world of Half-Life 2, resources like ammunition and health are not always abundant. Effective resource management and conservation are crucial for survival, especially during prolonged engagements or when facing overwhelming odds. Every bullet and every health pack counts.

Ammunition Management: The Art of Scarcity

Ammunition is one of the most critical resources. Unlike many shooters, Half-Life 2 doesn't shower you with bullets. This encourages a more thoughtful approach to combat:

  • Weapon Choice: Always consider which weapon is most efficient for the current threat. Use the Pistol for headshots on weaker enemies, the SMG for suppressing groups, and the Shotgun or Pulse Rifle for more robust targets.
  • Headshots: Aiming for the head significantly increases damage and can often eliminate enemies with fewer shots, conserving ammunition.
  • Melee and Gravity Gun: Don't underestimate the power of the Crowbar for close-quarters combat or the Gravity Gun for dealing with weaker enemies or manipulating environmental hazards. These can save precious bullets.
  • Scavenging: Thoroughly search defeated enemies and the environment for dropped ammunition. Don't leave any behind if you can help it.
  • Precision over Volume: Firing wildly will deplete your ammo reserves quickly. Take your time, line up your shots, and make each one count.

Health and Armor: Staying Alive

Your health and armor are your lifeline. Maintaining them is paramount:

  • Medkits and Health Stations: Use these whenever possible, but be strategic. If you're only slightly injured, it might be better to save a medkit for a more critical situation.
  • Armor: Armor acts as a buffer, absorbing damage before it reaches your health. Always try to keep your armor charged by finding battery packs.
  • Avoid Unnecessary Damage: Learn enemy attack patterns and utilize cover to minimize the amount of damage you take. Every hit you avoid is a resource you don't need to replenish.
  • Environmental Hazards: Be cautious around explosive barrels, electrical hazards, and other environmental dangers, as they can harm you as well as your enemies.

Conserving Other Resources

While less critical than ammo and health, other resources also benefit from conservation:

  • Gravity Gun Energy: While the Gravity Gun doesn't consume traditional ammo, its supercharged mode does have a limited energy supply. Use its powerful blasts judiciously.
  • Grenades: Grenades are powerful but limited. Save them for situations where they can have the maximum impact, such as clearing out a heavily fortified position or dealing with a large group of enemies.

Exploration and Discovery

Thorough exploration often rewards players with hidden caches of ammunition, health, or armor. Don't rush through levels; take the time to investigate side paths and hidden areas. The game is designed to reward observant players who are willing to look beyond the obvious.

Strategic Retreat

Sometimes, the best resource management is knowing when to disengage. If you're low on health and ammo and facing overwhelming odds, a strategic retreat to a more defensible position or to find resources can be the wisest course of action.
