Prepare to navigate the city's underbelly, reunite with a familiar face, and acquire your first essential tools for survival.

Overview: Teleportation Malfunction & Urban Escape

Following your brief but eventful stay at Dr. Kleiner's Lab, an unfortunate teleportation malfunction leaves you stranded. Instead of the intended destination, you find yourself in a desolate, garbage-strewn alleyway on the outskirts of City 17, far from the safety of the resistance. This is where your true journey begins, forcing you to adapt quickly to the hostile environment.

Key Objectives:

• Locate Alyx Vance: She was also caught in the teleportation mishap and is your immediate priority.
• Acquire Basic Weaponry: You'll need to defend yourself against the immediate threats of City 17's underbelly.
• Navigate the Urban Environment: Learn to traverse the rooftops and back alleys to avoid Combine patrols.

Walkthrough:

1. The Alleyway and First Encounter:
   • You'll start in a narrow alley. Immediately to your left, you'll spot a Crowbar embedded in a wooden crate. This is your first and most reliable melee weapon. Equip it immediately.
   • Use your new crowbar to smash any wooden crates you encounter. These often contain vital supplies such as Health Kits, Pistol Ammo (for later), or HEV Suit Energy.
   • As you proceed, you'll encounter your first enemies: Headcrabs. These parasitic creatures are fast but fragile. A single swing of the crowbar is usually sufficient. Be mindful of their leaping attacks.
2. Reunion with Alyx:
   • Continue through the alleyways, smashing crates and dispatching Headcrabs. You'll soon hear familiar voices. Alyx Vance will appear, providing covering fire with her Pistol. She'll guide you through the labyrinthine back passages.
   • Follow Alyx closely. She often provides crucial hints and points out paths.
3. Rooftop Navigation:
   • Alyx will lead you to a series of rooftops. There will be several gaps requiring precise jumps. If you fall, look for ladders or alternate paths back up. Alyx will often wait for you or point out the correct path.
   • During this section, you'll occasionally see Combine Soldiers patrolling below. Avoid engaging them directly; your current arsenal is limited, and stealth is your best option. Alyx will often whisper warnings.
4. Zombie Encounters:
   • In darker, more secluded areas, you may encounter Zombies (humans infected by Headcrabs). These are slower but more resilient than Headcrabs. Aim for the Headcrab attached to their torso for a quick kill, or use multiple crowbar swings.
5. Approaching the Canals:
   • Alyx will eventually lead you to a dilapidated building overlooking the vast canal system that snakes through and around City 17. This marks the imminent transition into Chapter 3: 'Route Kanal'.

Chapter 3: Route Kanal (Part 1)

Having navigated the perilous urban sprawl of 'A Red Letter Day', you and Alyx now stand at the precipice of a new challenge: the extensive canal network. This section of the guide covers your descent into the canals, your first encounters with Combine forces in this new environment, and the acquisition of your primary mode of transportation for the next several chapters: the iconic airboat.

Overview: Canal Descent & Airboat Acquisition

The canals offer a different kind of challenge, with open waterways, hidden dangers, and the constant threat of Combine patrols. Your immediate goal is to find a way down to the water and secure a vehicle to navigate the vast network.

Key Objectives:

• Descend into the Canals: Find a safe route down to the water level.
• Locate a Means of Transportation: The canals are too vast to traverse on foot.
• Deal with Combine Resistance: The Combine maintain a presence even in these desolate waterways.

Walkthrough:

1. Descent into the Canals:
   • From your vantage point with Alyx, look for a path leading downwards. This will typically involve a series of precarious ledges, broken stairs, and possibly a few short drops. Follow Alyx's lead as she points out the path.
   • Be careful not to fall into the water from too great a height, as this can cause fall damage.
2. First Canal Section:
   • Once at water level, you'll find yourself in a murky, narrow section of the canal. You'll encounter more Headcrabs and possibly a few Barnacles (ceiling-dwelling creatures with long, sticky tongues). Use your crowbar to dispatch them.
   • Look for submerged debris or platforms to avoid prolonged exposure to the water, which can slow you down.
3. Combine Sniper Encounter:
   • As you progress, you'll come under fire from a Combine Sniper positioned on a distant rooftop. Alyx will point them out. There's no direct way to eliminate them at this point; your goal is to move quickly and use cover (pipes, concrete barriers, submerged structures) to avoid their shots.
   • Listen for the distinct crack of the sniper rifle and the laser sight to anticipate shots.
4. The Airboat Shed:
   • Continue along the canal, navigating around debris and avoiding sniper fire. You'll eventually reach a large, partially submerged shed or boathouse. This is your destination.
   • The shed will likely contain a few Headcrabs or Zombies. Clear them out with your crowbar.
5. Acquiring the Airboat:
   • Inside the shed, you'll find a battered but functional Airboat. Alyx will comment on its condition. Approach it and interact (default 'E' key) to enter. This is your primary mode of transport for the next several chapters.
   • Alyx Departs: Once you're in the airboat, Alyx will inform you that she needs to take a different route to contact the resistance. She'll wish you luck and depart, leaving you to navigate the canals alone.
6. First Airboat Controls:
   • The game will prompt you with basic airboat controls. Practice maneuvering in the immediate area. The airboat is fast and agile, but can be tricky to control in tight spaces.

Strategy Tips & Loadout:

• Airboat Handling: Get comfortable with the airboat's controls. It's crucial for navigating the winding canals and evading enemies. Use the boost function sparingly for quick escapes, clearing gaps, or ramming weaker obstacles.
• Crowbar is King (Early Game): Don't underestimate the crowbar. It saves pistol ammo and is highly effective against Headcrabs and Zombies, especially when you're on foot.
• Pistol Precision: When you acquire the pistol, aim for headshots on Combine soldiers to conserve ammo. Early game ammo is precious.
• Environmental Hazards: Be aware of explosive barrels, gas tanks, and other environmental hazards. These can be used to your advantage against enemies (shoot them when enemies are nearby) but also pose a threat to you if you get too close.
• Scavenge Thoroughly: Always check every nook and cranny, especially around Combine checkpoints or abandoned structures, for health, suit energy, and ammo.
