In the oppressive grip of the Combine, various factions and organizations fight for survival and resistance. From the remnants of the Black Mesa research team to the burgeoning human resistance movement, understanding these groups is key to navigating the world of Half-Life 2. Each has its own motivations, resources, and methods, shaping the narrative and gameplay in profound ways.

The most prominent organization Gordon Freeman encounters is the Human Resistance. This scattered network of individuals, often led by figures like Eli Vance and Dr. Kleiner, operates in secret, utilizing salvaged technology and guerrilla tactics to strike back at the Combine. They are the primary source of support and information for Gordon, providing him with weapons, guidance, and safe havens. Their efforts are crucial for any hope of liberating Earth.

Opposing the Resistance is the monolithic Combine, an interdimensional empire that has conquered countless worlds. On Earth, they maintain absolute control through their technologically advanced military, the Civil Protection (CP), and their enigmatic Overwatch. The Combine's primary goal is resource extraction and subjugation, viewing humanity as little more than a labor force. Their presence is felt everywhere, from the imposing Citadel to the ubiquitous Striders.

Within the Combine's hierarchy, the Civil Protection serves as the visible enforcers of their rule. Clad in distinctive riot gear, they patrol cities and suppress any ss of dissent. While often portrayed as brutish and unthinking, some individuals within the CP, like Barney Calhoun before his defection, were once ordinary citizens forced into service.

Another significant, albeit shadowy, group is the Vortigaunts. These alien beings, once enslaved by the Nihilanth, have now allied themselves with humanity. Their unique psionic abilities and deep understanding of energy make them invaluable allies, often aiding Gordon in combat and providing crucial exposition about the Combine's nature and the universe's wider conflicts. Their liberation from the Nihilanth is a pivotal moment in the lore.

Finally, the Black Mesa Research Team, though largely decimated, forms the ideological backbone of the Resistance. Figures like Dr. Eli Vance, Dr. Isaac Kleiner, and Dr. Judith Mossman represent the scientific minds who inadvertently opened the portal to Xen and are now dedicated to undoing the damage and fighting the Combine. Their past research and discoveries are often the key to overcoming Combine technology.
