Enemy Types & Weaknesses

Navigating the hostile environments of Half-Life 2 requires a keen understanding of your adversaries. This section details the various enemy types you'll encounter, their attack patterns, and crucial strategies to exploit their weaknesses, ensuring your survival in City 17 and beyond.

Combine Forces

The primary antagonists, the Combine, field a diverse array of units, each with distinct tactics.

Combine Soldier

  • Description: The backbone of the Combine occupation, these soldiers are well-armored and equipped with pulse rifles. They often operate in squads and utilize cover effectively.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Headshots: A well-placed shot to the head with any firearm is often a one-hit kill or severely cripples them. Utilize the Pistol or SMG1 for precision.
    • Explosives: The Grenade or RPG are highly effective against groups or entrenched positions. Look for opportunities to bounce grenades around corners.
    • Gravity Gun: In later chapters, the Gravity Gun can be used to disarm them or hurl environmental objects for devastating impact. Consider grabbing their own Pulse Rifle energy balls and sending them back.
  • Strategy: Prioritize taking cover and engaging them from a distance. Flank their positions when possible. If they throw grenades, immediately relocate.

Combine Elite Soldier

  • Description: Distinguished by their white armor, these are tougher versions of the standard soldier, boasting more health and often wielding the powerful Pulse Rifle.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Headshots: Still the most efficient way to dispatch them, though they may require multiple headshots with weaker weapons. The Shotgun at close range is devastating.
    • Explosives: Even more effective due to their increased health. Don't hesitate to use a Grenade or RPG if available.
    • Gravity Gun: Excellent for disarming or environmental kills. Their Pulse Rifle's secondary fire (energy ball) can be caught and redirected for massive damage.
  • Strategy: Treat them as high-priority targets. Avoid direct confrontations in open areas. Use cover and peek-shooting tactics.

Combine Suppressor (Shield Soldier)

  • Description: These soldiers carry a large energy shield, making them impervious to frontal attacks. They advance steadily, often accompanied by other Combine units.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Flanking: Their primary weakness is their exposed back. Maneuver around them to shoot their unshielded body.
    • Explosives: A well-placed Grenade can force them to drop their shield or deal direct damage if it explodes behind them.
    • Gravity Gun: You can grab objects and throw them over their shield, or use the Gravity Gun to briefly stun them, allowing you to get behind.
  • Strategy: Do not engage them head-on. Focus on circling them or using environmental hazards. If in a tight corridor, a well-timed Shotgun blast to their exposed side can be effective.

Combine Overwatch Soldier (Sniper)

  • Description: Found in elevated positions, these soldiers wield a powerful sniper rifle capable of one-shotting Gordon Freeman on higher difficulties. A red laser sight indicates their target.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Explosives: The most reliable way to deal with snipers. A single Grenade or RPG round will usually eliminate them.
    • Gravity Gun: If you can find a loose object, you can often use the Gravity Gun to launch it at their position, disrupting their aim or even killing them.
    • Flanking/Rush: If you can get close enough without being spotted, a quick rush with the Shotgun can work, but this is risky.
  • Strategy: Prioritize finding cover immediately upon spotting their laser sight. Identify their position and use explosives. In areas like the rooftops of City 17, look for alternate paths to bypass or get a better angle on them.

Xen Creatures & Headcrabs

The remnants of the Black Mesa incident, these creatures are often found in desolate or infested areas.

Headcrab

  • Description: Small, fast-moving parasites that leap at their victims, attempting to attach to their heads.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Crowbar: The Crowbar is your best friend against these. A single swing will usually kill them.
    • Pistol: One or two shots from the Pistol are sufficient.
    • Gravity Gun: Can be used to launch them away or into environmental hazards.
  • Strategy: Keep your distance and use melee or low-ammo weapons. Listen for their distinctive skittering sound.

Fast Headcrab

  • Description: A more agile and dangerous variant of the headcrab, these move incredibly quickly and are harder to hit.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Shotgun: The spread of the Shotgun is excellent for hitting these fast-moving targets.
    • SMG1: Rapid fire can suppress them, but aim carefully.
    • Gravity Gun: Can be effective if you can predict their trajectory and launch an object.
  • Strategy: Stay alert and listen for their high-pitched shriek. Use weapons with a wider spread or high rate of fire.

Poison Headcrab

  • Description: Identified by their darker coloration and distinct "hissing" sound, these headcrabs inflict poison damage, reducing your health to 1 and slowly regenerating it.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Crowbar: Still effective, but requires careful timing due to their poison.
    • Pistol/SMG1: Standard firearms work well.
    • Gravity Gun: Excellent for keeping them at bay without risking poison.
  • Strategy: Prioritize these targets immediately to avoid the debilitating poison effect. If poisoned, seek health or armor quickly.

Zombie

  • Description: Humans reanimated by headcrabs, these slow-moving but durable enemies attack with powerful claw swipes.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Headshots: Aim for the headcrab itself for a quicker kill. The Pistol or SMG1 are good choices.
    • Shotgun: Devastating at close range, especially to the torso or headcrab.
    • Gravity Gun: Can be used to dismember them or launch heavy objects for instant kills.
  • Strategy: Maintain distance. If a headcrab is exposed, prioritize shooting it. If multiple zombies are present, use the Shotgun or explosives.

Fast Zombie

  • Description: Reanimated by fast headcrabs, these zombies are incredibly agile and can scale walls, making them a significant threat.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Shotgun: The most effective weapon due to their speed and erratic movement.
    • SMG1: High rate of fire can suppress them, but accuracy is key.
    • Explosives: A well-placed Grenade can clear a group quickly.
  • Strategy: Keep moving and try to catch them as they leap or climb. Listen for their distinctive screech.

Poison Zombie

  • Description: A grotesque, bloated zombie carrying multiple poison headcrabs on its back. It will hurl these headcrabs at you.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Shotgun: Effective at close range, especially if you can hit the headcrabs on its back.
    • Explosives: A single Grenade can often destroy all the headcrabs and kill the zombie.
    • Gravity Gun: Can be used to grab and throw the launched poison headcrabs back at it.
  • Strategy: Prioritize destroying the headcrabs on its back first to prevent them from being thrown. Maintain distance and use cover.

Specialized Threats

Barnacle

  • Description: Stationary creatures that hang from ceilings, extending a long, sticky tongue to catch prey.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Crowbar: A single swing to the mouth will kill it if you can reach.
    • Pistol/SMG1: A few shots will dispatch them.
    • Gravity Gun: You can grab objects (like explosive barrels or even other enemies) and feed them to the Barnacle, killing it.
  • Strategy: Look up! Always check ceilings in dark or infested areas. Use the Gravity Gun to clear them safely.

Antlion

  • Description: Large, insectoid creatures that burrow through sand and emerge to attack. They are attracted to vibrations.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Shotgun: Very effective at close range.
    • SMG1: Good for sustained fire against groups.
    • Gravity Gun: Can be used to launch objects at them. The Bugbait is their ultimate weakness.
  • Strategy: Avoid sandy areas if possible. Once you acquire the Bugbait, use it to control and direct them against other enemies.

Manhack

  • Description: Small, flying Combine drones equipped with spinning blades that inflict melee damage.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Crowbar: A well-timed swing can destroy them.
    • Pistol: One or two shots will take them down.
    • Gravity Gun: The most effective weapon. Catch them in mid-air and launch them into walls or other enemies.
  • Strategy: Listen for their buzzing sound. Use the Gravity Gun to neutralize them quickly before they get too close.

Roller Mine

  • Description: Small, spherical Combine mines that roll towards you and explode upon contact.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Gravity Gun: The ideal tool. Catch them and launch them back at Combine soldiers or into other mines for chain reactions.
    • Pistol/SMG1: A few shots will detonate them from a safe distance.
  • Strategy: Always be aware of your surroundings in areas where these are deployed. Use the Gravity Gun to turn them into offensive weapons.

Turret (Combine)

  • Description: Stationary Combine automated turrets that deploy from walls or ceilings, firing rapidly.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Explosives: A Grenade or RPG shot will quickly destroy them.
    • Gravity Gun: Can be used to tip them over, disabling them permanently. This is often the most ammo-efficient method.
    • Flanking: If possible, get behind them and shoot their exposed power core.
  • Strategy: Prioritize disabling or destroying these immediately. Use cover and the Gravity Gun to your advantage.

Striders

  • Description: Massive, three-legged Combine war machines equipped with a powerful pulse cannon and a smaller machine gun.
  • Weaknesses:
    • RPG: The primary weapon for taking down Striders. Aim for their "head" or the glowing red core on their underside.
    • Magnusson Device: Later in the game, these sticky bombs, combined with the Gravity Gun, are specifically designed for Striders. Attach one to the Strider, then shoot the device with any weapon to detonate it.
  • Strategy: Keep moving and use cover to avoid their attacks. Focus fire with the RPG. When using the Magnusson Device, ensure you have a clear shot to detonate it after attachment.

Gunship

  • Description: Combine attack helicopters that patrol open areas, firing rockets and machine gun rounds.
  • Weaknesses:
    • RPG: The only effective weapon against a Gunship. It takes multiple direct hits to bring one down.
  • Strategy: Find cover and use the RPG. Aim carefully and lead your shots. Conserve RPG ammo for these encounters.
