Autosaves

Half-Life 2 features an automatic saving system that periodically saves your progress at key checkpoints throughout the game. These autosaves are crucial for ensuring you don't lose too much progress if you die or quit the game unexpectedly.

  • Frequency: Autosaves occur at significant moments, such as completing a major objective, entering a new area, or after certain scripted events.
  • Indication: When an autosave occurs, you will typically see a small icon or notification on your screen, often in the bottom right corner.
  • Loading Autosaves: Autosaves are listed separately from manual saves in the load menu.

Manual Saves (Quicksave)

You can manually save your game at almost any time by using the Quicksave function. This is highly recommended before attempting difficult combat encounters, challenging platforming sections, or complex puzzles.

  • Keybind: By default, the Quicksave function is often bound to the 'F5' key.
  • Purpose: Quicksaves create a single, easily accessible save file that is overwritten each time you Quicksave. This is ideal for quick checkpoints.
  • Loading Quicksaves: Quicksaves can be loaded directly from the main menu or the in-game menu.

Manual Saves (Save Game)

For more permanent saves, you can create named save files. This is useful for marking significant progress points or for creating multiple save slots to experiment with different approaches.

  • Accessing the Save Menu: Press the 'Escape' key to bring up the in-game menu, then select 'Save Game'.
  • Naming Saves: You will be prompted to enter a name for your save file. Choose descriptive names to easily identify your progress.
  • Managing Saves: The save menu allows you to create new saves, overwrite existing ones, and manage your save files.

Loading Progress

To load a previously saved game:

  1. From the Main Menu: Select 'Load Game'.
  2. From the In-Game Menu: Press 'Escape' to bring up the menu, then select 'Load Game'.

You will be presented with a list of your autosaves, quicksaves, and named manual saves. Select the desired save file and confirm to load your game.

Best Practices for Saving

  • Quicksave Frequently: Before any potentially dangerous situation, hit 'F5'.
  • Create Named Saves for Milestones: When you complete a major chapter or achieve a significant objective, create a named save.
  • Don't Rely Solely on Autosaves: While convenient, autosaves can sometimes be too far apart.
