To begin cultivating your own food sources and ensure a sustainable settlement, the first crucial step is to establish a Farm Plot. This essential structure allows you to grow various crops, providing a reliable and renewable source of sustenance. You will need to craft the 'Farm Plot' at your Basic Workbench. The materials required for its construction are straightforward: 3x Logs and 2x Dirt. Logs are typically gathered from floating debris or by chopping down any available trees on your starting platform. Dirt, on the other hand, can be acquired through a couple of methods. Initially, you might break down specific types of debris that yield Dirt. As you progress and unlock new technologies, you will gain access to a 'Dredger', a more efficient tool for gathering Dirt from the surrounding waters.

Once you have gathered the necessary components, place the Farm Plot on your existing raft platform. It's important to choose a strategic location that allows for easy access and potential expansion. After placement, the Farm Plot will be ready for planting. However, simply planting seeds is not enough for successful cultivation. You will need to ensure the plot is watered regularly. Initially, this will involve manually carrying water using a bucket. As your settlement grows and you unlock more advanced technologies, you can automate this process with a 'Sprinkler' system, which significantly reduces the micro-management required for farming.

The Farm Plot is the foundation of your food production. By mastering its use and understanding the needs of different crops, you can ensure your survivors are well-fed and can focus on other vital tasks. Neglecting to water your crops will result in them withering and dying, wasting your precious seeds and the effort put into preparing the plot.
